EasyJet has restarted its Newcastle to Alicante flights after a suspension of over three and a half years. This development brings renewed connectivity for passengers in the North East heading to Spain.

The first flights on this reinstated route began on April 2, with the service scheduled twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, until the end of October. Ticket prices start from £28.99 each way.

    Historic Suspension Due to Pandemic

EasyJet initially ceased its Newcastle to Alicante flights in late August 2020. This decision formed part of a broader strategy to cut costs amidst the global pandemic’s impact on international travel.

The suspension came when many airlines scaled back or completely halted international operations to mitigate financial losses during the travel downturn.

    Renewed Schedule and Competitive Fares

The relaunched service offers passengers regular travel options between Newcastle and Alicante twice a week. Ticket prices are competitively set starting at £28.99 per trip, appealing to both budget travelers and frequent flyers.

This move places EasyJet in direct competition with other airlines like Jet2, Ryanair, and Tui, which also operate on this route from Newcastle.

    Broader Impact and Connectivity

EasyJet’s decision to renew this route is part of a broader strategy to expand and solidify its presence in the North East of England.

In addition to Alicante, EasyJet provides year-round services to Belfast and Bristol, five weekly summer flights to Majorca, and weekly winter flights to Geneva. Moreover, the airline will resume flights from Newcastle to Amsterdam in September 2024.

    Statements from Key Figures

Ali Gayward, EasyJet’s UK country manager, expressed enthusiasm about the route’s relaunch, stating, “We’re delighted to be relaunching our route from Newcastle to Alicante, offering even more choice and connectivity to our customers in the North East travelling to Spain’s sunny coast this summer.”

This sentiment is echoed by Leon McQuaid, Newcastle International Airport’s director of aviation development, who highlighted the route’s importance in providing more choices to one of the airport’s most frequented destinations.

Airport Investments to Enhance Passenger Experience

Newcastle International Airport has invested over £20 million to improve the passenger experience. Significant enhancements include a refurbished security search area and updated catering outlets in the departure lounge.

Additionally, the airport’s executive lounge has undergone a multi-million-pound refit, further elevating the value proposition for travelers.

    Strategic Importance of the Route

The Newcastle to Alicante route’s reinstatement not only caters to holidaymakers but also supports business travel and regional connectivity, crucial for the economic vitality of the North East.

This strategic move reinforces EasyJet’s commitment to its customer base in the region, ensuring accessibility and convenience for various travel needs.

    Future Prospects and Connectivity Enhancements

EasyJet’s ongoing commitment to connectivity improvements and service expansions signals a promising future for air travel out of Newcastle.

The airline’s proactive approach in reinstating and launching new routes signifies a strong recovery and growth trajectory in the post-pandemic era.

EasyJet’s reinstatement of the Newcastle to Alicante route reflects a strategic move to enhance connectivity and provide greater travel options for passengers. The airline’s commitment to the North East, coupled with Newcastle International Airport’s investments, promises an improved travel experience.

This development marks a significant step in the region’s recovery from the pandemic’s impact on travel, heralding a period of growth and increased mobility for both leisure and business travellers.
