Travel Industry Body Calls on European Commission to Recognise Tourism’s Contribution

The European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Association (ECTAA) is urging the European Commission to acknowledge the economic significance of the tourism sector.

ECTAA’s manifesto stresses the crucial role of travel advisors and calls for improved consumer protections and sustainable tourism policies.

The ECTAA emphasises that travel advisors are indispensable for both leisure and business travellers. They provide a one-stop solution for travel arrangements, offering choice and transparency. Their influence extends beyond booking services; they can steer consumer behaviour towards more sustainable tourism options through their selection of eco-friendly suppliers.

ECTAA points out that travel advisors are often hampered by an uncompetitive market. The dominance of certain suppliers raises concerns about the assurance of consumer choice and transparency, particularly in the flight sector. Travel advisors need guaranteed access to comprehensive travel content on fair and non-discriminatory terms to fully serve their clients.

Instead, ECTAA advocates for the introduction of Airline Failure Protection. This would ensure airlines offer guarantees or protection for the refund and repatriation of stranded passengers when they cease operations, thus safeguarding consumers and promoting fair competition.

Such measures are necessary to ensure the sector’s growth aligns with environmental and social sustainability goals, thereby enhancing its resilience to crises.

Initiatives that support the tourism sector can lead to significant economic benefits, including job creation and increased tax revenues, which underscores the need for tourism to be given greater importance in legislative agendas.

The association’s influence is considerable, and its calls for policy reforms and sustainable practices are backed by its extensive industry representation.

ECTAA remains committed to advocating for policies that enhance the tourism sector’s resilience and sustainability. By addressing market challenges and promoting fair practices, the association aims to secure a more competitive and consumer-friendly travel market.

The ECTAA’s call to action highlights the pressing need for the European Commission to prioritise tourism in its policies. By ensuring fair practices and supporting sustainability, the economic and social benefits of tourism can be fully realised. This will not only protect consumers but also bolster the industry’s long-term resilience and growth.
