Canadian Travelers Are Booking Later Than Ever, Changing the Industry Playbook

Like chess players, they used to meticulously arrange the pieces on the calendar weeks, sometimes months, in advance of their vacations. However, Canadian tourists have recently been arriving with no plan and a queen in hand. They are substituting impromptu travel for predictable planning by booking flights just two weeks prior to departure.

Recent data indicates that the trend has accelerated significantly. 47% of Canadian tourists made reservations for overseas trips less than 30 days in advance in 2024. Previously thought to be uncommon outside of last-minute family emergencies or business trips, this behavior has remarkably become the norm. Surprisingly, it’s not limited to urbanites or younger generations. Provinces, demographics, and even income levels are all affected.

Travel websites such as Expedia and Hopper have noticed the change over the past year and have responded with flexible rescheduling options and dynamic pricing models. Last-minute flight searches from Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary to warm-weather locations like Cancun and Punta Cana have clearly increased, according to their dashboards. Interestingly, Wednesday nights tend to see the highest volume of these searches, indicating that the spontaneity is not wholly impulsive but rather timed to avoid midweek mental exhaustion.

At Pearson Airport, I once heard a couple standing in front of the departures board debating whether to go to Vancouver or Lisbon. Previously, only retirees or travel influencers could dream of such freedom. It has evolved into a way of life that redefines how people interact with time, uncertainty, and value.

This trend is being driven by a number of factors. Travelers discovered how easily plans could be canceled, credits could be issued, and dreams could be delayed during the pandemic. A population that values flexibility over strict commitments was produced by that collective memory, which is still very much present today. “People are booking emotionally, not just economically,” according to the head of a travel agency in Ottawa.

The popularity of remote work and hybrid schedules is another significant factor. Monday meetings from a Caribbean resort are no longer a joke for digital professionals, particularly independent contractors and freelancers. They are becoming more and more possible. In this case, the booking delay is a result of strategic flexibility rather than negligence. In actuality, Canadians are exchanging certainty for opportunity.

Notably, hotel chains and airlines have taken notice. These days, some suppliers target Canadian cities with flash sales, which are typically designed for vacations from Thursday to Monday. These offers have a short lifespan, which encourages people to make decisions now or later. In addition to being reactive, this pattern is incredibly successful at encouraging behavior.

Additionally, tourism boards have changed. In an attempt to capitalize on short booking windows and new weather forecasts, Destination Canada, in collaboration with a number of provincial agencies, has started implementing geo-targeted campaigns a few days prior to long weekends. Smaller areas can now compete with tropical giants thanks to this particularly inventive data-driven agility.

Although it is invigorating, this spontaneity is not without conflict. Occasionally, last-minute travelers are caught off guard by visa processing times, passport backlogs, and peak-season congestion. Some travelers, who have become accustomed to the routines of preparation, find themselves rushing for travel insurance, vaccination records, or even luggage.

However, many Canadians find that the flexibility to make last-minute reservations is worth the possible inconvenience. The trip to Costa Rica was “the most accidental, but best decision I’ve made all year,” according to a recent Edmonton graduate. There appear to be psychological advantages to being able to act on a mood rather than a spreadsheet, especially after years of pandemic-related limitations.

In terms of the economy, this change is making brands reconsider lead generation schedules. Companies that offer travel insurance are changing the windows of coverage. Loyalty programs and credit card benefits are being updated to allow for real-time redemptions. Even travel agencies have changed course and started offering “48-hour escape” packages that provide carefully planned itineraries without requiring any advance planning.

The industry is changing through strategic pricing, outstanding customer service, and improved mobile experiences. Platforms that provide clarity rather than complexity are successful. Customers value speed and ease of use. Apps that provide urgent last-minute alerts are not only beneficial in this setting, but they are also very effective.

Importantly, this change in behavior goes beyond logistics. It suggests a more extensive change in culture. Living in the present is becoming more important to Canadians, possibly as a coping strategy for uncertainty around the world. When gratification can be bought and experienced by the weekend, at least in travel, delayed gratification is no longer a virtue.

However, this does not mean that planning is no longer relevant. There will always be occasions like weddings, school vacations, and family get-togethers that call for advance notice. However, impulsive travel is no longer the exception. Many people now use it by default, particularly Gen Z and millennials who grew up dealing with shifting algorithms and erratic schedules.

This late booking culture is likely to grow in the upcoming years as AI tools enhance travel recommendation engines and voice assistants become more dependable. At the touch of a button, personalized trip curation could further reduce the time between desire and departure. This change feels both inevitable and freeing.

The message is especially clear for airlines, tour companies, and hotel chains: if you’re not prepared for passengers until they’re ready to board, you risk missing them completely. Flexibility is now expected rather than a benefit.

Additionally, logistics no longer limit the joy of choosing adventure over agenda for Canadian travelers. Whether it’s a vineyard in Kelowna or a beach in Belize, the suitcase is already half-packed even though the ticket isn’t booked yet.
