British Airways announces changes to Avios collection programme

British Airways has announced changes to its Avios loyalty programme, simplifying and expanding the way customers can collect Avios on flights.

Starting from October 18, 2023, Executive Club Members will have a transparent and consistent method for earning Avios based on their Tier status. The new collection model allows members to earn up to nine Avios per £1 spent, depending on their Tier status.

In addition to these changes, British Airways will allow members to collect Avios on ancillary purchases such as upgrades, pre-paid seat selection, and excess baggage. This means that customers will be able to accumulate Avios not only from flights but also from additional items they purchase, either in advance or at the airport.

Ian Romanis, British Airways’ Director of Retail and Customer Relationship Management, said: ‘We continue to listen to our customers’ feedback and ideas to evolve our Executive Club. This is a simpler and more transparent system offering more opportunities to collect Avios than ever before and rewarding loyalty based on customers’ cash spend. It’s a tried and tested model already used by a number of global airlines, including our sister airline Iberia.’

Under the new model, the number of Avios collected will be based on the amount spent rather than the distance travelled, providing a more consistent and clearer approach to earning rewards. The revised earning rates for flights from October 18, 2023, based on Tier status are:

    * Blue members: 6 Avios per qualifying £1 spent

    * Bronze members: 7 Avios per qualifying £1 spent

    * Silver members: 8 Avios per qualifying £1 spent

These changes will also apply to flights marketed by Iberia. The amount of Avios collected on Iberia market flights will follow the Iberia Plus proposition.

These changes are part of ongoing improvements to the Executive Club. Earlier this year, British Airways introduced Avios-Only flights, where 100% of seats are exclusively available to members as Reward Seats. The airline also offers various ways for members to collect Avios, such as using the British Airways American Express Credit Card, traveling with Uber, converting Nectar points, and shopping at the British Airways Avios eStore.
