Jet2.com, a UK-based low-cost airline operating out of Leeds Bradford Airport, has announced new routes to cover the gap left by the suspension of operations by the airline, bmibaby, in the UK.

The airline is offering eight new destinations from East Midlands Airport, including Dubrovnik, in Croatia; Menorca, and Ibiza, in Spain; Nice, in France; Larnaca, in Cyprus; and Gran Canaria, in Canary Islands; as well as ski routes to Chambery, in France; and Geneva, in Switzerland. The new routes are part of the airline’s Winter 2012 and Summer 2013 programme.

To serve the new routes, the airline will be using an additional 737 aircraft from East Midlands airport for the summer of 2013, increasing capacity to around half a million seats, or a 36 percent increase.

Ian Doubtfire, the airline managing director, said, ‘Many local travellers have been affected by the decision to cancel bmibaby operations from East Midlands Airport. This is why we have decided today to launch our great value flights to eight new popular destinations, including the ski gateways of Chambery and Geneva. It is important to us that we give people continuity and ensure they can still enjoy travelling to their favourite destinations from their local airport.

It is undoubtedly a very exciting time for us at East Midlands Airport as we celebrate our second anniversary. We’ve been thrilled with the success of the past year but are very much looking forward to the next year, which will bring to the region more fantastic destinations, a new aircraft, even more capacity plus a further jobs boost. We are committed to East Midlands Airport and to giving our local passengers an unrivalled choice of city, sun and ski destinations.’
