From 2nd November, travellers from the UK will be able to enjoy direct access to the stunning Arctic landscapes of Northern Norway, thanks to a new weekly flight from London Gatwick to Harstad-Narvik Airport in Evenes. This winter route will be further enhanced by a second direct flight from Milan Bergamo, Italy, starting on 23rd December, offering a gateway to the unique winter experiences of Lofoten, Vesterålen, and Narvik.
These routes, operated by Norwegian Airlines, will run weekly, with flights departing London on Saturdays and Bergamo on Mondays, making it easier than ever for international travellers to explore the region. Local tourism boards, including Destination Lofoten, Visit Narvik, Visit Vesterålen, and Northern Norway Tourism, are celebrating this improved connectivity, as it opens the door for more visitors to experience Northern Norway’s awe-inspiring winter scenery and adventures.
A Season of Contrasts
Winter in Northern Norway presents a remarkable opportunity to witness the famous northern lights, which are particularly vibrant during the long polar nights. This natural spectacle can be viewed against the dramatic backdrop of Lofoten’s towering mountains or Vesterålen’s expansive coastlines. The Polar Nights span from early December to early January, during which the sun does not rise above the horizon. This period is also characterised by the rare “Blue Hour,” when the twilight casts a deep blue light over the snow-covered landscape. The snow and sea reflect this unique colour, transforming the scenery into a breathtaking Arctic wonderland.
Adventure, Culture, and Wildlife
Northern Norway is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a range of activities from ski touring and dog sledding to sea safaris that allow visitors to explore the rugged landscapes and coastlines of the region.
Lofoten is renowned for its striking scenery and rich fishing heritage. Visitors can participate in the traditional practice of Lofotfiske, targeting Atlantic cod—a key part of the region’s economy for centuries. The mix of mountains and fjords provides a stunning setting for activities such as ski touring, sea safaris, and even Arctic surfing. Every experience is framed by the breathtaking natural environment.
Narvik, just a short distance from Lofoten, is home to the renowned Narvikfjellet ski resort, the leading winter sports destination in Northern Norway. The resort offers a variety of skiing options, including alpine, freeride, randonnée, and ski touring, all with spectacular fjord views. Narvik will host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championship in 2029, reinforcing its status as a premier destination for winter sports. Visitors can also enjoy the serene experience of dog sledding through Narvik’s snow-covered mountains, accompanied by the soft sound of sled dogs padding through the snow.
For wildlife enthusiasts, Vesterålen offers some of Norway’s best winter whale-watching opportunities. Visitors can witness orcas and humpback whales up close in the fjords. In addition to whale-watching, Vesterålen is home to moose safaris, where visitors can see these majestic animals in their natural habitat, as well as sea eagle safaris, offering a chance to observe these impressive birds soaring over the icy fjords.
Cultural and Culinary Experiences
Beyond outdoor adventure, Northern Norway offers rich cultural experiences. In Narvik and Vesterålen, visitors can engage with Sami culture, learning about traditional reindeer herding and the customs that have shaped this indigenous community’s way of life.
Culinary experiences in the region are also a highlight. Restaurants like Kvitnes Gård in Vesterålen offer farm-to-table dining, showcasing the best of locally sourced ingredients. This charming 19th-century farmstead provides a unique connection to nature through its traditional Norwegian cuisine.
Another cultural highlight is the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes, where visitors can explore Norway’s maritime history and learn about the significance of Hurtigruten’s role in transport and trade.
