TransPennine Express (TPE) is set to run up to three extra services daily for festivalgoers returning from this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

From Saturday, August 3 until Friday, August 30, the train operator will provide additional services alongside its usual timetable, supporting those attending various shows, including live music, comedy, and dance.

On weekdays, special TPE services will depart from Edinburgh Waverley at 9:56 pm to Glasgow Central, stopping at Haymarket. Another service will leave Edinburgh Waverley at 11:00 pm, making stops at East Linton, Dunbar, Reston, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnmouth, and Morpeth, before arriving in Newcastle at 12:59 am. Additionally, a train will depart from Newcastle at 8:01 pm, stopping at Morpeth, Alnmouth, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Reston, Dunbar, and East Linton, arriving at Edinburgh Waverley at 10:01 pm.

On Saturdays, an extra service will leave Edinburgh at 7:56 pm for Glasgow Central, stopping at Haymarket. On Sundays, a train following the same route will depart at 9:42 pm.

Adam Fairclough, head of Customer Experience at TransPennine Express, said: ‘We are pleased to be able to offer these extra services for those travelling during the Fringe Festival and to support the city of Edinburgh during this popular event.’

More than two million people are expected to travel to the Scottish capital for the festival, with thousands of shows taking place across over 250 venues in and around the city, making train services busier than usual.

‘We will be doing everything we can to help as many people as possible travel by rail during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We’re asking our customers to plan ahead, expect services to be very busy, allow extra time for journeys and, where possible, to avoid travelling during the busiest times,’ Adam added.
