Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur Jason Atherton launches his life’s legacy restaurant on Savile Row

Row on 5, the new flagship restaurant by the celebrated and award-winning chef and restaurateur Jason Atherton is now open.

Split across two floors at No.5 Savile Row, the iconic home of British bespoke tailoring, the restaurant is set to be Jason and wife Irha’s personal and professional legacy, and the pinnacle of culinary mastery. It marks a first for Savile Row – on which there has never been a restaurant leased in its 290-year-old history- and is the realisation of a dream for the Michelin-starred chef, who is also a passionate champion of British tailoring.

The venture sees a continuation of its sister restaurant Row on 45, which was awarded two Michelin stars within the first six months of its opening – Row on 5 is offering a world class 15-course tasting menu divided into three acts and showcasing the peak seasons of the finest of British produce.

“I have been fortunate enough to open restaurants all over the world, but Row on 5 is different. I want it to be my legacy, and I don’t say that lightly. ‘Row’ stands for ‘Refinement of Work’, and in this case I mean my life’s work as a chef. Row on 5 will be like a fashion designer’s haute couture collection – a showcase of creativity and finesse, but instead of fine fabrics and artisanal needlework, the stars of Row on 5 will be the world-class culinary team and the very best produce from all over the British Isles.”

At its helm is Executive Chef Spencer Metzger, formerly Head Chef at The Ritz for 13 years before he moved to Dubai as one of Jason’s opening chefs at Row on 45, and Roxane Dupuy as Executive Sommelier.

The restaurant features just 28 covers, making the experience incredibly intimate.

Upon arrival, guests first make their way down a staircase on the street to the entrance on the lower level where they are met by their host for the evening in a low-lit reception area.

They are then led through a curtain to the bar and lounge area, with roaring fireplace, surrounded by three wine cellars and a view into the lounge kitchen designed by Smallbone, and commence with the first 3 courses of the 15-course tasting menu.

The main dining room, located on the upper (i.e. street level) floor, is accessible by an immersive LCD lift and the grand staircase. Here guests are then served the main 9 courses of their menu. For the last 3 courses of desserts and petit fours, guests will be brought back down to the lower level where they can further indulge in fine wines, digestifs or cocktails in a more informal setting.

Both kitchens have been designed and built by Smallbone in Wiltshire, with lighting by Occhio, while the wine cellars, which house some 4500 bottles, have been built by Sorrells using British sustainable wood.
