The 5-track EP brings together three talented and unique voices from the region: the up-and-coming Turkish artist Selin Sümbültepe, Egyptian indie singer-songwriter Maii Waleed, and the multi-talented Lebanese producer Zeid Hamdan.

MDLBEAST Records, celebrated for its dedication to showcasing groundbreaking talent in the MENA region, proudly announces the release of the “Hemhal” EP, an enchanting fusion of Turkish and Egyptian indie music. Spanning five tracks, the EP showcases the label’s commitment to the alternative music scene, offering a bold and genre-defying sound that transcends cultural and musical boundaries.

“Hemhal” unites diverse sounds and styles, seamlessly blending indie pop with the rich traditions of Turkey and Egypt. The powerful vocals of Sümbültepe and Waleed, paired with Hamdan’s finely-crafted production, create an atmospheric and emotional soundscape that invites listeners to immerse themselves in themes of love, identity, and shared human experience.

Selin Sümbültepe, known for her critically acclaimed albums “Cızgan” (2017) and “Ben Estim Sen Esme” (2021), brings her multi-instrumentalist skills and deep-rooted storytelling to this project. Her distinctive sound, influenced by her Turkish heritage and hometown of Hatay, blends effortlessly with Hamdan’s eclectic production. As she works on her third studio album, Sümbültepe continues to evolve and redefine her artistic identity, with “Hemhal” showcasing her ability to fluidly navigate between genres.

Egyptian indie talent Maii Waleed contributes a contrasting yet complementary style to the EP. Known for her poignant lyrics centered on themes of love, disappointment, and identity, Waleed’s work adds emotional depth to the collaboration. With previous projects such as the “Moga” EP (2013) establishing her as a leading voice in the Egyptian indie scene, Hemhal marks an exciting new chapter in her artistic journey.

At the core of the “Hemhal” EP is Zeid Hamdan, one of the most influential figures in the Middle East’s indie music landscape. Dubbed one of Lebanon’s leading cultural lights by CNN, Hamdan has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, from the pioneering indie band Soap Kills to Arabic electro-pop groups in the likes of Kazamada. With “Hemhal,” Hamdan’s innovative production intertwines the distinct musical threads of Sümbültepe and Waleed, crafting a culturally rich and sonically adventurous experience.

The five-track EP features captivating compositions, starting with “Ma Ureedu,” a rhythmic track that masterfully blends pop, Middle Eastern influences, and dub, showcasing high-energy, passionate vocals that draw listeners in. In contrast, “Derbest” presents a slower, sinuous melody, enriched by heartfelt vocals and beautiful instrumental bridges that evoke deep emotions. “Meryem Meryemti” stands out as a poignant ballad, reminiscent of Middle Eastern classics, with an engaging beat and profound lyrics that resonate. “Tekbar Tekrar” artfully combines the distinct voices of the three artists, creating a catchy beat that promises an immersive listening experience. Closing out the EP, “Rabih” is a passionate composition, driven by a rich array of Middle Eastern instruments and rhythms, featuring dynamic drums and bells that guide the enchanting build-up of high-energy vocals.

“Hemhal” not only propels MDLBEAST Records’ influence in the alternative music scene, but also serves as a flagship release that resonates with the burgeoning indie scenes in Turkey, Egypt, and beyond. Continuing the label’s mission to amplify and uplift the best talent in the region, this collaboration provides artists such as Sümbültepe, Waleed, and Hamdan with a platform to explore, create, and share their music with the world. With “Hemhal,” MDLBEAST Records sets a new standard for alternative music in the MENA region, reaffirming that music possesses the power to transcend borders and connect us all.
