Brittany Ferries sails from Plymouth to Spain after eight-month layoff

After an eight-month layoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Brittany Ferries has finally sailed to Spain from Millbay Docks in Plymouth.

The first ferry left Millbay at 4:45pm on Sunday, June 6, with 807 passengers, 180 crew members and 421 vehicles making the voyage, before arriving in Santander at around 2pm on Monday afternoon.

The trip was undertaken by the company’s flagship ferry boat, the Pont-Aven, with spirits said to have been high among passengers and crew.

A Brittany Ferries spokesperson said: ‘It’s an exciting day here on the port. The sun is shining and it’s full of happy customers who are excited to be going on their holidays. There’s a real sense of normality in the air, as well as a sense of summer which has been much needed.’

At full capacity, the Pont-Aven can accommodate 2,400 passengers, 650 cars and has a total of 650 cabins, but in order to meet health requirements, the number of passengers allowed on board has been significantly reduced. Self-service restaurants have replaced A La Carte services and the main bars on all ships will not be open due to a change in the French government’s guidance.

While the sailing was seen as a step towards normality, passengers must still adhere to a number of Covid guidelines, including the wearing of masks, social distancing and utilising sanitising stations on deck. The ferry boat’s shops cinemas, playrooms and video games rooms have now opened with limited capacity, and with some on-board entertainment also now available.

Brittany Ferries to launch Barfleur Club Lounge on Poole to Cherbourg ferry services

Brittany Ferries, a passenger car and freight service operating from eleven ports, linking four countries: UK – France, UK – Spain and Ireland – France, has said that it will launch a new, exclusive lounge on Barfleur, its cruise-ferry operating from Poole to Cherbourg this summer.

Besides the high-speed services operating from Portsmouth, the Poole to Cherbourg ferry route is the fastest way to get from the UK to France on the western Channel. The new Barfleur Club Lounge is expected to offer more premium travel experience. Accessed by boarding card, it will include USB charging points, newspapers, complimentary tea, coffee and cold drinks, as well as a sleep kit for overnight crossings.

The new 20-seat lounge will open from July 1, 2017 and customers can book a reclining seat for GBP18 during the day time and GBP25 for overnight sailings. The announcement comes as Barfleur is completing its 25th year of operation in 2017.

‘We’re excited to launch this premium service on crossings between Poole and Cherbourg in response to demand from our passengers,’ said Gareth Bewley, customer services manager. ‘They will soon be able to relax in a luxurious, reclining seat within an exclusive lounge and enjoy complimentary services throughout the sailing. Wi-fi, nespresso coffee and newspapers are just some of the things that will come as standard for travellers.’

Brittany Ferries was set up by a collective of French farmers as a freight-only operator in the early 1970s, with the aim of bringing French agricultural products to a wider British market. Today Brittany Ferries is the market leader on the Western Channel for passengers and for freight. It is also a provider of ferry-inclusive motoring holidays to France and Spain.

Brittany Ferries offers 20 per cent discount on early holiday bookings for 2017

Brittany Ferries, the passenger car and freight service linking four countries: UK – France, UK – Spain and Ireland – France, has announced a 20 per cent discount on all of its sail-and-stay gite, cottage and casa holidays for customers who book before October 25, 2016.

Holidaymakers are offered a choice of accommodation in some of the most attractive areas of France and Spain. Brittany Ferries sails directly to these locations from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth.

‘The offer promises big savings for customers and Brittany Ferries remains one of the few operators to take a modest £40 per person deposit to secure the holiday,’ said Christiane Barker, Brittany Ferries general manager holidays. ‘The balance is payable six weeks before departure, and this helps spread the cost of holidays for families into 2017 as we head towards the Christmas period.’

Launched last week, the offer is available for breaks throughout the year, including Easter, spring half-term break and the school summer holidays. This year, the company has seen particularly strong demand for accommodation in the Finistere region of Brittany.

‘Properties in Southern Brittany are current hot spots and many bookings are from customers who stay year after year,’ Barker added. ‘This isn’t really surprising of course. Once you’ve experienced the beauty of Southern Brittany and have seen how accessible it is from our ports of arrival like Roscoff and St Malo, it’s hard not to keep coming back.’

The popular properties in Finistere, with some availability for next summer, include Pont Kereon, Bannalec; Lechiagat, Treffiagat, near Pont l’Abbe and Neulliac, near Pontivy, the company said. Pont Kereon boasts single-storey, terraced cottages with capacity for four people. Bannalec is within walking distance and has a range of bars, restaurants and shops with sandy beaches. Holidaymakers booking by October 25 can save up to £139.00 on ferry-inclusive prices, from £533.00 in low season to £698.00 in high season, before discount.

Located only 500m from the local shops and a sandy beach, Lechiagat is also near the busy fishing port of Guilvinec. Brittany Ferries offers more ‘economie’ sailings to Le Havre and Bilbao

Ferry and holiday company Brittany Ferries has announced it has chartered a vessel, which will operate under its ‘no-frills’ Brittany Ferries economie brand, starting May 2015.

The additional ship will serve the Portsmouth to Le Havre route (four times a week) and the Portsmouth to Bilbao route (once a week).

Launched last March, the economie brand is aimed at customers who wish to travel to France or Spain without the cruise-style experience typically provided by Brittany Ferries. One-way fares for a car plus two this May start from £79 to France and £209 to Spain. Bookings for the additional ship will open in early February.

The new vessel is currently named ‘Sirena Seaways,’ although she will be renamed on entering service with Brittany Ferries. Facilities and space on board are limited compared to Brittany Ferries’ cruise-ferry services, but will include a cafe, bar, boutique and restaurant, as well as free Wi-Fi internet access and a reading lounge.

Brittany Ferries also said that customers can mix and match economie sailings with the company’s other cruise-ferry and high speed sailings to Normandy, Brittany and northern Spain, travelling out by one route and returning by another. In total there are 10 routes and up to 142 weekly sailings, giving customers a degree of added flexibility and choice.

Mike Bevens, Group Commercial Director, said: ‘We have been really pleased with the demand for our new no-frills service so this additional ship will provide a welcome boost in capacity and provide our customers with an even wider range of sailing times. Furthermore, it now brings the total number of services to Spain to seven a week, again providing more choice.’

The ship is certified to carry 610 passengers, but Brittany Ferries has said that it will restrict the numbers well below so that passengers have enough space to enjoy the journey. There are 196 cabins, of which 14 will be pet-friendly. Portsmouth-Le Havre remains the only route between the UK and France to offer this feature, aimed at meeting the rising demand for cross-Channel pet travel.
