In a recent announcement, the Association of Touring and Adventure Suppliers (Atas) declared the prominent figures who will spearhead their 2024 conference. Attendees can look forward to dynamic sessions led by industry experts.

The highlights include insights from adventurous keynote speakers who promise to deliver engaging and thought-provoking sessions. Their contributions are expected to resonate deeply with attendees, unveiling new perspectives and strategies in the evolving travel landscape.

    Keynote Speakers Announced

The Association of Touring and Adventure Suppliers (Atas) is set to showcase two notable figures as keynote speakers at their upcoming conference. James Thornton, the CEO of Intrepid Travel, will discuss advancements in the adventure travel sector. He will also address issues of overtourism and the positive impacts of travel.

In addition, Saunders Carmichael-Brown, an adventurer and broadcaster, will share insights from his 2022 Antarctica expedition. His journey uncovered the historic shipwreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance. This session is supported by AE Expeditions, recognising his role as a guest speaker on their cruise ships.

    Conference Theme: Connect

This year’s Atas conference will revolve around the theme of ‘connect’, aiming to foster stronger partnerships and collaborations within the travel industry. Held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, the event spans two days from 15-16 October.

Atas director Claire Brighton expressed her excitement about the event’s lineup. She emphasised the passion both keynote speakers have for sustainability and the travel sector, enhancing the appeal of the scheduled talks.

    James Thornton’s Contributions

Having joined Intrepid almost two decades ago, James Thornton has been pivotal in steering the company through challenging times. Under his leadership, Intrepid Travel achieved record financial results last year, marking its most successful period to date.

Thornton is not only a seasoned executive but also an avid marathon runner with a keen interest in Africa. His favourite Intrepid tour is the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda, reflecting his deep connection to the continent’s landscapes and wildlife.

He is expected to provide valuable insights on how travel can remain a force for good, drawing upon his extensive experience and passion for the outdoors.

    Saunders Carmichael-Brown’s Journey

With a substantial online following, Saunders Carmichael-Brown has made a name for himself across YouTube, Instagram, and X. His media presence is complemented by features on major networks such as Channel 4, BBC, and BT Sport.

During the conference, Carmichael-Brown will narrate the details of the Shackleton expedition and the resulting documentary. He will also share his expertise on documenting expedition cruises and capturing immersive travel experiences.

His story not only highlights adventure but also promotes the effective use of modern media in enhancing travel narratives, a skill highly relevant in today’s digital landscape.

    Networking and Learning Sessions

The final day of the conference, 16 October, will be filled with insightful sessions and networking opportunities. Attendees will have the chance to engage directly with industry leaders and peers, fostering valuable connections.

Additionally, a Selling Skills workshop is scheduled for the afternoon of 15 October. This session builds on last year’s successful ‘New to’ session, providing practical skills applicable to various experience levels in travel sales.

    Registration and Accommodation

Atas has encouraged early registration for the event, highlighting that spots are quickly filling up. The conference promises to attract a high number of travel professionals seeking to expand their knowledge and networks.
