Colin Murison Small, an icon in the travel industry, passed away at 93. A pioneer in package holidays, his influence extended decades.

Colin Murison Small was more than just a co-founder of Aito; he was a visionary in the travel industry. He played a pivotal role in developing package holidays, both for summer and winter vacations. From chalets in Switzerland to villas in Spain, Murison Small was a true innovator. His work laid the foundation for modern travel experiences, making high-quality holidays accessible to a broader audience.

The creation of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito) was a groundbreaking move, driven by Murison Small’s leadership. Amid the challenges post the collapse of Court Line in 1975, he convened a meeting in a London pub with competitors, which led to the formation of the association. This effort ensured smaller operators could operate through a collective bond. His strategic foresight allowed for the survival and prosperity of numerous small tour operators.

The concept of the chalet party is attributed to Murison Small, beginning in 1958. With two friends agreeing to cook in exchange for accommodation, the idea took off, soon becoming a sought-after travel format. His company, initially known as Murison Small and later Small World, was the first to employ chalet hosts, fondly called ‘Muribirds’. By 1963, he had extended his innovation to the Greek island of Rhodes, pioneering villa holidays.

Even after his departure from Small World in 1985, Murison Small didn’t cease to contribute to the travel industry. He continued to innovate with new ventures, such as Hidden Greece. His contributions continued to shape the industry landscape. Colin’s son, Alex, underscored his father’s understated yet significant impact, saying, “He was a creator, an innovator, and a quiet but very effective driving force behind the travel industry that we have today.”

His legacy continues through his family, including three children and seven grandchildren. The travel industry owes a debt of gratitude to this trailblazer, whose achievements set a standard for innovation and excellence.

Colin Murison Small will be remembered as a catalyst in travel innovation, whose work continues to inspire. His legacy endures through his family and the industry he helped shape.
