In the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, Northern Vietnam faces one of its gravest crises in over three decades. The region was battered by severe winds reaching 142 mph and heavy rainfall, leading to widespread devastation. More than 350 individuals have been reported dead or missing, and over 800 have sustained injuries due to landslides and falling trees.
The infrastructure damage is extensive. An estimated 188,000 homes have been damaged, destroyed, or flooded, significantly impacting the communities. Power infrastructure, critical bridges, and educational facilities have also suffered severe damage, disrupting normal life and essential services.
In response to this natural calamity, Intrepid Travel has initiated an emergency appeal through its charitable wing, in collaboration with the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, stationed in Vietnam to provide grounded support. All proceeds from this appeal will be directed to offer immediate relief to those most affected, ensuring the provision of shelter, food, and electricity to thousands.
Biheng Zhang, general manager of The Intrepid Foundation, emphasized, “Typhoon Yagi has been the largest storm to impact Vietnam in over 30 years. By supporting this appeal, the international community can aid in humanitarian efforts, fulfilling the urgent needs of children and families across 13 northern provinces.”
Vietnam remains a favoured destination for travellers, and Intrepid has longstanding partnerships with local organisations there. Despite the natural disaster, Intrepid confirms the safety of its travellers and staff in Vietnam. Trips have been rerouted to avoid affected areas, thus maintaining the economic benefits of tourism without risking safety.
In a show of international solidarity, the UK government has announced an aid package worth £1 million. This support aims to enhance the initial response phase, providing emergency supplies and critical services, such as health, water, and sanitation.
The collaborative effort underscores the vital role of international and local cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises.
