Sara McCready, a former nurse, has ventured into the travel industry with Gnome and Away Travel after health challenges changed her career path. Launching this business with her husband Kevin, Sara has quickly proven her expertise in the travel field. Her commitment to the industry, despite personal obstacles, is making waves in the Devon community.

With her background in nursing, Sara’s resilience is evident in her efforts. Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, along with Intracranial Hypertension, has shaped her journey, but her passion for travel remains unwavering. ‘After leaving school I had my sights set on working in travel but ended up working in nursing, which I did for many years until I fell ill,’ she reveals, highlighting her enduring dedication.

In the heart of Devon, Sara McCready, once a dedicated nurse, has embarked on a new journey. Leaving her medical career behind due to unforeseen health challenges, Sara now leads Gnome and Away Travel. This transition was fuelled by her passion for the travel industry, a dream she nurtured since leaving school. With her husband Kevin, she launched this venture in February, stepping into the role of a Hays Travel Explorer franchisee.

Facing the challenges of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, a muscle-wasting condition, and Intracranial Hypertension, which causes severe headaches, Sara’s determination didn’t waiver. Her shift from healthcare to travel wasn’t just a career change; it was a life-altering decision driven by necessity and her long-held aspirations. ‘After leaving school I had my sights set on working in travel but ended up working in nursing, which I did for many years until I fell ill,’ Sara shares with resolve.

Vision for Gnome and Away Travel

Sara envisioned Gnome and Away Travel as more than just a business. She wanted it to be a testament to resilience and passion. The hospitality industry has always piqued her interest, and this venture allows her to channel that interest into a full-fledged enterprise. The company’s beginnings were humble, yet Sara and Kevin’s dedication quickly turned it into a thriving travel agency. The couple aimed to offer exceptional customer service, which quickly became a hallmark of their business.

    Achievements in a Short Time

Sara notes, ‘The support we have received from Explorer Franchise and the opportunity to work from home to accommodate my health conditions has been fantastic.’ This flexibility has allowed the business to grow while maintaining a personal touch. Her story resonates with many who face similar challenges, inspiring them to follow their dreams despite obstacles.

    Future Expansion Plans

They are also exploring ways to increase their local presence through pop-up travel events and involvement in community activities like Comic Cons and charity events. By the end of 2025, they aim to solidify their brand as a trusted local travel provider, engaging directly with their community.

    Support from Explorer Franchise

This supportive network has enabled Sara to focus on building a business that not only meets her needs but also exceeds the expectations of her clients. The franchise’s adaptability has been a crucial factor in her success.

    Local Engagement and Outreach

Furthermore, these activities help raise the profile of Gnome and Away Travel as a proactive and community-oriented business. Sara and Kevin believe that fostering these local connections will play a significant role in their continued success and expansion.

    The Role of Family

Customers appreciate this personal touch, which makes their interactions more meaningful and enjoyable. As the business grows, maintaining this connection is a priority for the McCreadys.

    A Promising Future

Looking ahead, their strategy involves reinforcing their brand identity and expanding their reach in the travel market. By leveraging their strengths in customer service and community engagement, they aim to continue their growth trajectory.

    Building a Lasting Business

Sara reflects on her journey with optimism, ‘We would like to remain a family business at heart, but who knows? We are very excited for the future.’
