Survey Reveals Occupations Of Caravan Owners

A survey by The Trading Floor, a part of Callcredit Information Group and the manager of a database of car insurance data on 8.8 million motorists, has revealed the owner occupation profile of caravans in the UK.

The survey revealed that the top six professions for caravan ownership are teachers, engineers, company directors, police officers, civil servants and nurses, indicating that four of the top 6 professions for caravan ownership involve workers in the public sector.

In 2011, there was a 5 percent increase in UK holidaymakers choosing to holiday at home rather than taking the option of travelling abroad, and the caravan industry benefits from a large slice of that domestic spend, with its share being worth an estimated GBP6 billion per year to the UK economy. Touring caravan or motorhome holidays regularly attract 1.5 million enthusiasts, and the caravanning organisations also benefit from the interest, with The Caravan Club claiming one million members, and the Camping and Caravanning club having almost six hundred thousand members.

Chris McDonald, managing director of The Trading Floor, said, ‘There are many stereotypes associated with caravan owners but our figures reveal that there is a real cross section of people who have fallen for the charms of caravan ownership. Every summer approximately two million caravans take to the roads and although the majority of people who own a caravan are retired, our study of caravan owners that are still in employment, has shown that a surprising range of people have opted for the freedom a caravan can provide.’
