The Hydro, an event arena in Glasgow, Scotland, is ready to open on September 2, 2012.
The building will be equipped to host around 12,000 people, and will be used for concerts and entertainment events. It is reckoned to be one of the largest such venues in the UK, after the Manchester Arena, the O2 Arena in London, the Sheffield Arena, and the LG Arena in Birmingham. Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre Limited (SECC) is constructing the venue.
John Sharkey, the chief executive officer for SECC, said, ‘The progress that has been made with The Hydro has been outstanding. The entire project team including staff at the SECC should be congratulated for their efforts involved in the process of taking The Hydro on its journey to completion and ready for business. The construction team, our own staff and The Hydro team have all been playing their part in getting the building ready to allow us to deliver a fantastic opening night.
The relationship with our naming rights sponsors, SSE (Scottish Hydro) is superb and this association has been invaluable in helping us create awareness to the wider public. Additional official partnerships with leading brands are also in the process of being confirmed.’
Also commenting on the arena, the deputy chief executive officer of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Richard Muir, said, ‘This is very exciting news for Glasgow. The Hydro at The SECC will be a world-class addition to the Glasgow’s overall entertainment venue offering, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city and providing wider economic benefits to businesses in Scotland.
The Hydro building has already become a real talking point in the city and we look forward to seeing the project move towards the completion date next year and to hearing the announcement as to who will take to the stage on the opening night.’
