Package Holidays Lead, Spain Stands Out as Favourite

HSBC UK reveals package holidays as the favoured vacation style for a broad spectrum of travellers.

    • Among the survey participants, 35% prefer booking package holidays, with Spain emerging as a top destination.
    • Certain demographics like 25-34 year-olds and parents with children display a preference for city breaks over package holidays.
    • The economics of holidaymaking reveal significant saving strategies among travellers, with costs heavily influencing choices.
    • Unexpected fees and spontaneous trips are prominent features of the travel experience, particularly affecting younger generations.

HSBC UK conducted a comprehensive survey that identifies package holidays as the most popular choice among British holidaymakers, with 35% of over 2,000 respondents expressing a preference for this type of trip. Spain ranks as the top destination according to 28% of those surveyed, while Greece, Italy, France, and Portugal follow closely behind.

Interestingly, the survey highlights a variation in holiday preferences based on demographics. While package holidays dominate overall, those aged 25-34 and parents travelling with children exhibit a tendency to opt for city breaks instead. This indicates a varied interest in travel experiences among different groups.

The economic aspect of holiday planning remains a crucial factor for many. The survey points out that 57% of respondents are reticent about discussing their holiday expenditure. A typical British traveller spends approximately eight months saving for their holiday, with families requiring up to ten months. For parents, the cost of a family holiday abroad is critical, with a majority prioritising affordability, favourable weather, and reasonable accommodation prices.

Spending additional sums during a holiday appears common, with an average tourist incurring around £250 on extras such as dining, entertainment, clothing, and transportation over a week-long trip. This additional spend reflects the dynamic nature of holiday expenses beyond basic costs.

The younger demographic, particularly those aged 16-24, show a readiness to discuss their holiday spending openly compared to older age groups. Souvenirs are a considerable aspect of holiday spending, with many choosing items like landmark memorabilia, local crafts, and food as keepsakes.

Spontaneity plays a significant role in travel experiences, with 36% of participants reporting unplanned day trips. This trend sees older travellers, especially those over 55, engaging more in impromptu excursions, enhancing their enjoyment. However, unexpected expenses are common, with 31% having faced such costs largely due to foreign card charges and conversion fees. Gen Z travellers are notably affected, with over half encountering surprise charges.

The HSBC UK survey provides insightful revelations into the varied holiday preferences and spending behaviours of British travellers, highlighting a strong inclination towards package holidays with Spain as a popular choice.
