EasyJet has significantly bolstered its presence in the UK with the establishment of a new base at Birmingham Airport. This expansion is poised to enhance connectivity and competition within the region.

The airline’s capacity will experience a 10% increase this year, reaching a remarkable 57 million seats. This strategic move is expected to support over 1,200 jobs and offer 16 new routes, marking a major milestone in EasyJet’s growth.

    Increased Capacity and Fleet Expansion

With the inauguration of its new base in Birmingham, EasyJet will see a substantial rise in its UK capacity. The airline’s capacity is set to grow by 10% in 2024, resulting in 57 million seats on sale. This increase is a testament to EasyJet’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the UK market.

This year, four additional aircraft are set to join EasyJet’s UK fleet. The fleet expansion will continue into 2025, further reinforcing the airline’s growth trajectory and capacity to meet increasing demand.

    Boost to Birmingham Airport

The opening of the Birmingham base brings significant benefits to the airport. A projected 60% increase in passenger numbers is anticipated this year compared to 2023, highlighting the substantial impact of EasyJet’s new base.

Birmingham will now offer 16 new routes, including popular destinations such as Majorca, Dalaman, Antalya, Sharm el Sheikh, and Tunisia. This summer is poised to be the biggest yet for EasyJet Holidays, as flights from Birmingham carry one of the highest proportions of holidaymakers in the network.

    Supporting Regional Employment and Economy

A key highlight of this expansion is the creation of over 1,200 jobs in the Birmingham region. This significant boost in employment is a direct result of the increased operations from the new base.

Johan Lundgren, EasyJet’s Chief Executive, said, “We are excited to open our newest UK base at Birmingham today, providing more choice, competition, and connectivity as well as supporting over 1,200 jobs for the region.”

The base not only enhances travel options but also supports the local economy by creating jobs and opportunities for growth in related sectors.

    Future Growth and New Routes

EasyJet plans to launch additional routes from Birmingham and other UK locations in the coming months. This initiative underscores the airline’s strategy to tap into the untapped potential of the Birmingham market and other regions.

Airport Chief Executive Nick Barton stated, “Customers can now take advantage of the airline’s 16 new routes and have the flexibility of flight-only or a full package holiday.”

    Hydrogen in Aviation Initiative

In his role as the first chair of the Hydrogen in Aviation alliance (HIA), Johan Lundgren emphasised the UK’s potential to lead in hydrogen-powered aviation. He highlighted the urgency to build on the progress made in hydrogen technology to secure global leadership.

Lundgren noted, “The breakthroughs in hydrogen-powered technology happening across the UK are truly astonishing but these advances will be inconsequential if we fail to complement them with the appropriate skills, infrastructure, investment and regulation needed to support hydrogen aviation.”

The HIA has called for a comprehensive industrial strategy to ensure the UK’s leadership in hydrogen aviation. This strategy includes massive increases in hydrogen supply, deploying renewable energy, and significant investments in infrastructure and skills.

    Report on Hydrogen Aviation

The alliance’s report details the critical steps and timeframe needed to establish the UK as a leader in hydrogen aviation. “HIA’s milestone delivery report outlines the critical steps and the timeframe needed to do this and if followed, not only will it create significant wealth, jobs and prosperity across industry and across the UK, it will be a vital component in decarbonising the aviation sector,” Lundgren added.

The report underscores the necessity for a coordinated approach involving the government, industry, and educational institutions to develop the required skills and infrastructure.

    Conclusion

EasyJet’s new Birmingham base marks a significant milestone in its UK expansion strategy. With increased capacity, new routes, and a commitment to regional employment, the airline is set to make a substantial impact.

Furthermore, the Hydrogen in Aviation initiative reinforces EasyJet’s role in pioneering sustainable aviation, ensuring long-term growth and environmental responsibility.

EasyJet’s strategic expansion with its new base at Birmingham Airport is a testament to its commitment to growth and regional development. By increasing capacity and introducing new routes, the airline is poised to enhance connectivity and competition.

Additionally, the focus on hydrogen-powered aviation through the HIA alliance positions EasyJet as a leader in sustainable travel, ensuring the industry’s future prosperity and environmental stewardship.
