Both Manchester and Stansted airports are experiencing robust growth, with February setting new passenger records.

The increase in traveller numbers sets a positive outlook as the airports gear up for the bustling Easter period.

    Record Passenger Numbers in February

Manchester Airport experienced a notable increase in passenger numbers during February, reporting a throughput of 1.9 million passengers. This figure signifies a 14% rise compared to the previous year and surpasses pre-pandemic levels.

In contrast, Stansted Airport exceeded its prior record set in February 2020 by almost 50,000, with over 1.92 million travellers. Both airports witnessed significant growth due to the heightened demand during the half-term period.

Stansted noted that even without the additional leap year day in February, it would have broken previous passenger records, highlighting the sustained growth in traveller numbers.

    Popular Destinations and Emerging Trends

Manchester’s top travel destinations included Dublin with 86,000 passengers, Dubai with 85,000 passengers, followed by Amsterdam, Tenerife, and Qatar.

Stansted’s popular routes were to the Canary Islands, southern Spain, Turkey, and Dubai. Short breaks to cities such as Dublin, Edinburgh, and Istanbul were also favoured by travellers.

The airports have observed increased interest from overseas visitors seeking affordable access to the UK, particularly to London. This trend reflects the global appeal of the UK capital as a tourist destination.

    Easter Preparations and Expectations

With the Easter holidays on the horizon, both Manchester and Stansted are preparing for what is traditionally one of the busiest travel times of the year.

Efforts are being made to ensure passengers experience smooth transitions through the airports, with additional security staff recruited to manage the anticipated surge in travellers.

The airports are emphasising the importance of passengers planning their journeys meticulously, reminding them to adhere to regulations such as carrying liquids in containers no greater than 100ml.

    Operational Improvements and New Routes

Manchester Airport has implemented several operational improvements to enhance passenger experiences, including reducing wait times at security to less than 15 minutes.

Significantly, Manchester launched its inaugural flight to Amman with Royal Jordanian Airlines and announced new services to Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc.

The airport is also looking forward to launching its first flights to Las Vegas in June, indicative of its growing range of international connections.

    Ongoing Airport Transformations

Manchester’s Terminal 2, although still under construction, has already been recognised as one of the world’s most beautiful terminals.

The airport’s extensive transformation programme aims to provide a seamless travel experience, aligning its facilities with modern travel demands.

With the completion of these transformations, Manchester Airport is optimistic about offering passengers an exceptional travel experience throughout the year, especially during peak seasons like Easter.

    Executive Insights and Future Developments

Chris Woodroofe, Manchester Airport’s managing director, expressed satisfaction with the airport’s performance, highlighting the continuous breaking of passenger records.

Jonathan Fowler, Stansted’s chief operating officer, emphasised the unrelenting demand for travel as the Easter break approaches.

Both executives reiterated their commitment to advancing airport capabilities, ensuring passenger satisfaction, and expanding route offerings to meet growing traveller demands.

    Conclusion

As Manchester and Stansted airports brace for the Easter surge, their recent performance indicates a positive trajectory in post-pandemic recovery.

The ongoing developments and strategic efforts underscore their roles as pivotal hubs in the UK’s aviation landscape, shaping future travel experiences.
