Over two million people from the UK are set to embark on their summer holiday adventures this weekend. Travel association Abta has projected a significant surge in travellers, with operations peaking on Friday, the busiest day of the weekend.

Airports across the country are preparing for a massive influx of passengers. Major airports, particularly in the southeast, anticipate handling hundreds of thousands of travellers eager to reach their holiday destinations.

Anticipation is building as over two million UK residents prepare to depart for their summer holidays this weekend. With Friday anticipated to be the busiest travel day, airports in the southeast, including Heathrow and Gatwick, expect a substantial influx of travellers. Stansted and Luton are also gearing up for large passenger volumes, with 200,000 and 116,000 departures expected, respectively.

Manchester airport is projected to handle 210,000 passengers, while Bristol anticipates 75,000. Though Scottish schools are already in session, many travellers are still expected to leave from Scottish airports. Additional regional airports, ports, and the Channel Tunnel will also experience heightened activity, according to travel association estimates.

Spain continues to be the leading choice for families, with the Costa del Sol, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands particularly popular. Strong demand is also observed for Greece, Portugal, Turkey, Croatia, Italy, Malta, and Cyprus. Long-haul destinations like Florida and Dubai remain favoured.

City breaks are gaining traction, with Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, and Lisbon as the top picks for urban getaways. According to Abta, these cities are preferred by those looking for a cultural and vibrant city experience during the summer.

Abta’s chief executive, Mark Tanzer, advises families to allow extra travel time to reach airports and ports. He noted, “Thousands of families will be jetting off this weekend as the majority of schools in the UK start their summer break. After months of cloud and rain, families will be keen to enjoy the warmth and sunshine of their favourite holiday destinations.” Tanzer also urged travellers to ensure they have sorted out essential travel requirements, including insurance.

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays have planned almost 1,000 flights this weekend, catering to 175,000 holidaymakers. This marks their largest summer programme to date, with flights to over 50 destinations across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Canary Islands. Majorca, Tenerife, and Faro are the standout choices this season.

As the summer holiday season kicks into high gear, the travel industry is set to witness unprecedented levels of activity. Families across the UK are eager to escape the dreary weather and enjoy sunny climates abroad.

With careful planning and adherence to travel advice, this weekend promises to be a successful start to the summer holidays for millions of travellers.
