Why this family chose Brazil: a surprising itinerary full of tips and discoveries

Family vacations are a chance to bond and create lasting memories, but planning one—especially for a family with young children—can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. When my family and I decided to embark on our next big summer trip, Brazil wasn’t initially at the top of the list. But after reading an inspiring blog post about the Northeast of Brazil and chatting with a friend who’d already been, we decided to take the plunge. What followed was an unforgettable adventure.

A Tailored Itinerary for the Family

We knew we wanted a trip that mixed adventure, relaxation, and fun for everyone. Our journey started in Rio de Janeiro, a place that’s practically synonymous with Brazil itself. From the famous Sugarloaf Mountain to the iconic Copacabana Beach, there’s no shortage of things to do. But what really captivated us was how the energy of the city seemed to seep into our bones, making us feel like we were part of something bigger.

After Rio, we ventured to the Northeast of Brazil, an area famous for its natural beauty, vibrant culture, and pristine beaches. Our itinerary included stops in São Luis, Lençóis Maranhenses, and Jericoacoara. This mix of urban exploration and nature left us feeling rejuvenated and thrilled by the diversity of Brazil’s landscapes.

Choosing the Right Time to Visit Brazil

One of the first things we learned about Brazil is how diverse the climate is across the country. Rio de Janeiro is best visited from May to November, when the temperatures hover between 15°C to 30°C. We arrived in July, expecting cooler weather, but were pleasantly surprised by daily temperatures of around 29°C, perfect for exploring and lounging on the beach.

In the Northeast, the rainy season lasts from January to July, but we visited in August, and it was ideal. The heat was balanced by the ocean breeze, and it felt perfect for outdoor adventures. It’s a good reminder that the right time to visit depends on where you’re headed within Brazil!

    How to Get to Rio

For those traveling from Europe, flying is the most practical option. The direct flight from Paris to Rio takes around 11 hours, but things didn’t go exactly as planned for us. We missed our original flight, but instead of panicking, we simply took the next available flight to São Paulo, and then connected to Rio the following day. Sure, we lost some time, but it became one of those travel hiccups that make for the best stories!

How to Travel in Brazil with Kids

When traveling with children, especially on a long trip, planning an itinerary that suits everyone is crucial. Brazil offers endless possibilities, but after reading about the Northeast, I knew it would be a perfect fit. This region is less crowded than places like Salvador de Bahia or the Iguazu Falls, and its blend of beaches, nature, and culture made it an excellent choice for a family-friendly getaway.

For families, having a variety of activities that balance sightseeing with downtime is key. In the Northeast, we had the chance to relax on the beaches of Jericoacoara and explore the awe-inspiring Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, all while enjoying the slower pace of life away from the big cities.

    Accommodation for Families

Finding the right place to stay can make or break a trip, especially with kids. We opted for a mix of hotels, pousadas (guesthouses), and bungalows—a choice that gave us both comfort and flexibility. Here’s a quick breakdown of our accommodations:

    • Rio de Janeiro: Although I initially wanted to rent an apartment for more space, we decided on a family room at a hotel just a few blocks from the beach. It wasn’t fancy, but it was practical and had a great breakfast buffet.
    • São Luis: We stayed in a more upscale hotel with a family suite that had two bedrooms—perfect for everyone to have their own space.
    • Jericoacoara: The hotel here was right on the beach, offering beachfront dining and a lovely pool, making it ideal for a relaxing family stay.

The Benefits of Using a Local Agency

Normally, I love planning trips myself—doing research, booking accommodations, and figuring out activities for everyone. But for this trip, I knew Brazil was large and full of unique challenges. That’s when I turned to a local agency. With the help of Joel from Brazil Discovery, we had an itinerary that was custom-tailored to our family’s needs. His local expertise meant we didn’t have to stress over the details, and we were able to focus on enjoying the experience.

Joel, who’s been living in Brazil since 1996, was instrumental in making everything run smoothly. From hotel bookings to transfers, and even arranging French-speaking guides, his hands-on approach made our trip seamless.

What to Expect in Terms of Cost

Traveling as a family isn’t cheap, but there are ways to save while still having an incredible experience. The total cost for our trip, including flights, accommodation, and activities, came out to around 6,000 to 7,000 euros. While it was an investment, the value of having everything organized and stress-free made it well worth it.

Meals were also reasonably priced. We took advantage of buffet breakfasts, packed sandwiches for long days of sightseeing, and ate at local restaurants, where the portions were hearty and affordable. On average, we spent around 20 euros per meal for four people—a great deal considering the quality of food and the portions.

Final Thoughts: A Memorable Family Adventure in Brazil

Looking back on our family trip to Brazil, I can confidently say it was one of the most enriching and memorable vacations we’ve had. From the energy of Rio de Janeiro to the natural wonders of the Northeast, we were constantly in awe of the beauty and diversity of Brazil. Working with a local agency made everything so much easier, and we will definitely return to explore even more of this incredible country in the future!

If you’re considering a family vacation, Brazil should definitely be on your radar—there’s something for everyone, from beaches to cultural experiences and so much more. Don’t hesitate to ask for tips or share your own experiences—this country has plenty of stories to tell!
