Premier Inn Tests Noise Sensors to Monitor Noisy Guests

Premier Inn, a UK-based hotel brand from Whitbread PLC, is conducting a trial of noise sensors at some of its properties in order to monitor noisy guests and prevent them from disturbing others at night.

The sensors, named ‘Ssshhh-o-meters’, are being located close to the guestrooms and will light up when noise levels reach a specific decibel level. The initiative is part of the brand’s ‘Good Night Guarantee’ for its guests, promising them a peaceful night at its hotel properties.

The company chief executive officer, Andy Harrison, said, ‘We asked our teams to come up with ideas about how we could reduce noise from other customers and they came up with some really novel innovations.

We’ve also introduced what we’re calling ‘ssshhh-o-meters’. They work a bit like a speedometer sign but positioned in a corridor and they light up when the noise reaches a certain decibel level, gently reminding people to keep the noise down.

It might seem like a bit of fun but it’s actually addressing a very real business challenge. Because we offer a money back guarantee it sharpens our focus on making sure we do everything we can to offer our guests a good night’s sleep.’

The brand is offering room nights priced at £29 for the winter season, for popular locations that include Exeter, Bournemouth, Liverpool, York and others in the UK. For an extra of £22.99 per person, the hotel brand is also offering a three-course meal, a choice of drinks, and a Premier breakfast the next day.

The brand has around 600 hotels across the UK and Ireland, and recently won the Best Leisure Hotel Chain award at the British Travel Awards 2012.
