🌋 Naples on Edge as Earthquakes Intensify

Earthquakes Shake Naples, May 13, 2025 – The ground is trembling beneath the feet of Naples residents. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake, the strongest recorded in the region in more than 40 years, struck the area this week, triggering renewed fears of a volcanic crisis.

The epicenter lies within the Phlegraean Fields caldera, a supervolcano west of Naples that has shown worrying signs of activity in recent years. Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) confirmed an increase in tremors and ground uplift—key indicators of volcanic unrest.

    ⚠️ Evacuation Plans Under Review

Local authorities, including the Prefecture of Naples, have begun preparing for potential evacuations in municipalities at highest risk, such as Pozzuoli, Bacoli, and Quarto.

“We cannot ignore the warning signs. It’s better to act preemptively than face disaster,” said the Prefect.

More than 80,000 residents could be temporarily displaced if the seismic trend continues or escalates.

📊 How Serious Is the Threat?

Experts warn that while this is not yet an eruption alert, the situation must be monitored closely. The current activity is classified as bradyseism—a slow vertical movement of the ground caused by magma or gas accumulation below the surface.

If ground uplift accelerates or gas emissions intensify, an eruption scenario can no longer be ruled out.
