Intrepid Travel’s Trek to Aid Morocco Earthquake Recovery

In a monumental effort to support recovery after the recent earthquake in Morocco, Intrepid Travel has announced a charitable trek to Mount Toubkal.

This initiative, scheduled for March 3-9, aims to raise funds for Education for All, a charity dedicated to girls’ education in the region.

The devastating earthquake last September struck near the area where Education for All (EFA) operates. Many boarding houses essential for educating girls were severely damaged.

Educational prospects for girls in the High Atlas Mountain regions remain limited due to geographic and cultural barriers. Initiatives like this trek are vital for sustaining educational infrastructure.

Participants will embark on a challenging journey to the summit of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. The trek is supported by a team from Intrepid.

Besides the physical challenge, trekkers will engage with local communities, gaining insight into the Amazigh culture and understanding the earthquake’s impact. A farewell dinner will be held on International Women’s Day.

Zina Bencheikh, Intrepid’s EMEA managing director, emphasized the significance of supporting EFA in rebuilding efforts.

Sonia Omar, CEO of EFA, highlighted the challenges faced in 2023, stating: “2023 was a challenging year for EFA and indeed everyone in the High Atlas region of Morocco.”

Sara Chakir will lead the trek. Hailing from the local area, she brings invaluable insight and passion to the expedition.

Each participant is required to fundraise a minimum of £250, contributing directly to EFA’s rebuilding efforts.

Intrepid Travel has committed all profits from this trek to EFA, illustrating their dedication to the cause. This follows their earlier appeal which raised over AU$650,000.

The trek offers an opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in the local culture while contributing to a significant cause.

Meeting with locals and understanding their resilience post-earthquake provides a deeper appreciation of the challenges faced.

The seven-day trek is priced at £550 per participant, covering essential logistics and support by the Intrepid team.

Registration includes guidance be provided by local experts, ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all involved.

This event marks a critical step in the ongoing efforts to support educational access and infrastructure development for girls in the High Atlas region.

This trek by Intrepid Travel stands as a beacon of hope and resilience for the High Atlas communities.

Such initiatives not only aid in recovery but also empower the youth, paving the way for a brighter future.
