The travel industry mourns the passing of Bill Munro, the visionary founder of Barrhead Travel, who died at 80. Known for transforming the high street travel agency landscape, Munro’s impact on travel retail was profound.

Munro began his journey in 1975, quickly establishing Barrhead Travel as a household name in Scotland. His pioneering spirit and commitment to exceptional service left a lasting legacy in the travel industry.

The Early Years and Founding of Barrhead Travel

In 1975, Bill Munro, having previously worked as a banker, identified a gap in the market for personalised travel services. This realisation led him to open Barrhead Travel on Barrhead Main Street, marking the beginning of an illustrious journey.

The initial response was overwhelming, with queues forming every Saturday. Holidaymakers thronged to explore new travel opportunities, drawn by the personalised service and innovative offerings Munro and his team provided, supported by seed finance from his brother, Donald.

    Expansion Across Scotland

Munro’s vision extended beyond the single store. During the 1980s and 1990s, as more UK residents opted for international holidays, Barrhead Travel expanded rapidly, opening outlets in major towns and cities across Scotland.

By 2010, under Munro’s leadership, the company had grown massively, boasting a turnover of £100 million and employing 400 staff across 20 locations, maintaining its status as the leading independent travel agent in Scotland.

    Transition of Leadership

In 2007, Munro transitioned the leadership of Barrhead Travel to his daughter, Sharon Munro, through a management buyout. He believed she would elevate the business to new heights.

He remarked, ‘I think I have taken the business to a certain level and Sharon is taking it to a much higher level,’ reflecting his confidence in the next generation.

Under Sharon’s leadership, the business did indeed grow, eventually being sold to the Travel Leaders Group in 2018, although the expected synergy did not materialise, leading to a parting of ways.

Munro’s role shifted to an advisory position post-sale, but he soon stepped back to focus on other pursuits, leaving a robust foundation for continued growth.

    Awards and Recognition

Bill Munro’s contributions to the travel industry did not go unnoticed. In 2010, he was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the prestigious Agent Achievement Awards.

Barrhead Travel, under his leadership, won the Best Large Travel Agent in Scotland award for ten consecutive years, a testament to the company’s outstanding service and reputation.

The awards underscored Munro’s ability to adapt and thrive in a competitive and ever-evolving industry, marking a high point in his career.

    Personal Life and Legacy

Bill Munro passed away peacefully in his home in Thorntonhall, South Lanarkshire, after a summer illness. He is survived by his wife Susan, daughters Sharon and Wendy, and grandchildren Ross and Hannah.

The Munro family has expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support and shared memories from friends and colleagues worldwide.

Munro is remembered not just for his professional achievements but for his personal warmth and commitment to his community, leaving behind cherished memories for many.

    Impact on the Travel Industry

Munro’s pioneering approach reshaped travel retail, setting new standards for customer service and business growth.

His legacy continues to inspire travel agents and entrepreneurs, showing the power of vision combined with dedication and hard work.

Barrhead Travel remains a testament to his impact, continuing to serve customers with the ethos he established.
