The travel industry mourns the loss of Carlo Broccoli, the esteemed founder of Britaly Travel, who passed away at 95. With a legacy marked by innovation and dedication, Broccoli’s contributions to travel were significant.

His passing, peaceful in the early hours of January 21, followed a brief illness. Fondly remembered by his son, Daniele, Broccoli’s life and career left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Carlo Broccoli’s journey began at the age of 21 when he moved from his hometown near Bologna, Italy to the UK in the 1950s. Initially working as a labourer due to a post-war labour shortage, he soon became an interpreter for the police after excelling in English at night school. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Peterborough’s first Italian greengrocer, creating a community hub for Italians in the area.

After retiring from the grocery business, Broccoli envisioned a travel agency to serve the Italian community. Thus, Britaly Travel was born in 1984 with the slogan ‘Only birds fly cheaper’, focusing on flights between Britain and Italy. This venture, initiated with his son Daniele, thrived by addressing a niche market need. Daniele recounts learning the intricacies of flight ticket sales from Pilgrim Air, underlining the father-son collaboration that drove the company’s early success.

Carlo’s retirement from the business occurred two decades ago, yet he remained a trusted advisor to Daniele. Their daily calls and lunchtime discussions were integral to Daniele’s management of the business. Despite no longer being at the helm, Carlo’s influence persisted, guiding key decisions and fostering the company’s enduring success.

Notably, Carlo’s encounters during travels established connections with influential figures, including former Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley. These interactions further cemented his legacy as a unique and respected figure in the industry.

Daniele reflects on the profound impact of his father’s philosophy on both his personal and professional life. The principles of kindness, integrity, and prudence are values he continues to uphold, attributing the enduring success of Britaly Travel and Typically Holidays to his father’s influence.

Even in death, Carlo commands respect. As shared by Daniele, the undertakers expressed their admiration, vowing to treat Carlo with the utmost dignity due to the long-standing relationship his family had with theirs.

Daniele continues to receive messages detailing his father’s positive influence on others, reinforcing Carlo’s legacy as not just a business leader, but a cherished figure who genuinely touched lives.

Carlo Broccoli’s legacy in the travel industry is one of profound dedication and integrity. His life’s work paved the way for Britaly Travel and Typically Holidays to thrive. As the community bids farewell, his teachings and philosophy remain cornerstones of the business, ensuring that his spirit and values endure among those he inspired.
