Megan Morikawa has been announced as the new chair of the Travel Foundation, stepping into the role with a strong background in climate science and sustainability. As Iberostar’s global sustainability director, she brings invaluable experience to the Foundation, aiming to propel the ‘Strategy 2030’ into action.
Her appointment follows the tenure of Helen Marano, and Morikawa is set to build on existing efforts to amplify the Foundation’s global impact. Her past involvements with renowned organisations like the World Economic Forum and the United Nations Framework Convention On Climate Change underscore her suitability for this pivotal role.
Morikawa’s commitment to sustainability is evident in her previous initiatives at Iberostar where she championed the circular economy and coastal health. As a trustee of the Foundation since October 2022, she has already contributed significantly to its mission.
Her leadership is expected to forge new strategic partnerships, recruit new trustees, and serve as an ambassador to enhance climate action and equity in tourism. This ambition aligns with the Travel Foundation’s declared goals to scale its global impact and advocate for accelerated climate initiatives.
Morikawa expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I am honoured to support the Travel Foundation as it launches its new strategy to further support the needs of communities and environments of destinations and businesses in tourism.” Her vision is to drive real systems change within the sector, collaborating closely with chief executive Jeremy Sampson.
Debbie Hindle continues as vice chair, providing continuity and stability within the board. The inclusion of leaders such as Jane Ashton, Dr Susanne Etti, and Georgette James on the board reflects a diverse and experienced leadership aiming for broader representation and impact.
