    The cruise industry often finds itself at the centre of debates concerning its environmental and social impacts on port communities. According to David Herrera, the president of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the sector unjustly receives significant criticism. In a recent panel session in Venice, Herrera contended that NCL is actively pursuing a more solution-oriented approach to these concerns.

    Addressing the issue of overtourism, Herrera acknowledged that it is a priority for NCL, stating, “It’s on our radar.” He illustrated NCL’s commitment to collaborating respectfully with destination partners. The company exemplifies this through its willingness to modify itineraries, adjusting port arrival and departure times based on local requests. This flexibility demonstrates NCL’s readiness to not only adapt but to act as a respectful partner focused on mutually beneficial outcomes.

    Herrera explained that the industry’s negative reputation arises from visible elements, such as the presence of large ships and assumed pollution, without recognition of the proactive measures being implemented. He stated, “Before we say we’ll leave, we want to reinforce the type of partner we want to be,” highlighting the importance of establishing strong partnerships with travel and destination stakeholders.
