Los Angeles fortifies its role as a global tourism hub with strategic commitments ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

    • Hollywood icon Tom Cruise makes a dramatic appearance during Paris Games’ closing ceremony.
    • LA Mayor Karen Bass receives the Olympic flag from Paris, signalling new beginnings.
    • Tourism officials aim to leverage LA’s unique attractions to boost European tourism.
    • Officials anticipate LA’s third-time hosting will highlight its status as a sports capital.

Los Angeles is setting the stage for a robust international tourism strategy ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games. With distinguished guests including Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, who made a memorable descent at the Paris closing ceremony, LA’s presence was undeniably influential. This event marked a pivotal moment as Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was entrusted with the Olympic Flag by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, symbolising a new chapter for the city.

On this occasion, Adam Burke, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, was present in Paris. His mission was to acquire deeper insights into the tourism impacts experienced during the Games and to refine strategic plans in anticipation of LA becoming an Olympic host city once again. Burke reiterated the city’s eagerness to welcome global audiences, stressing that this would be LA’s third instance of hosting the Olympics, a milestone matched only by Paris and London.

The tourism board’s commitment goes beyond mere event hosting. Francine Sheridan, the regional vice president for Europe and the Middle East, underscored the importance of the ceremonial events in captivating European interest in Los Angeles. She mentioned the aim to capitalise on both iconic stars and landmarks as significant draws for potential tourists. The spectacle involving Tom Cruise and LA’s scenic beaches was designed not just for entertainment but as a strategic appeal to European travellers.

Sheridan conveyed optimism that the ceremony, coupled with Hollywood’s allure, would significantly boost European visitor numbers in the coming years. The tourism board is determined to support the travel trade network in capitalising on this heightened interest. The countdown to LA28 has officially begun, and the board is gearing up for the expected influx of international visitors.

These efforts reflect a broader initiative to position Los Angeles as a leading sports capital globally. Burke highlighted that this visibility would fortify LA’s reputation as an elite destination for both sports enthusiasts and tourists. This strategic foresight is pivotal as LA aims to showcase its rich cultural and sporting legacy during the 2028 Games.

In the lead-up to 2028, Los Angeles is strategically positioning itself as a preeminent global destination for tourism and sports.
