Port of Dover Prepares for High Passenger Surge

The Port of Dover is bracing for a significant upsurge in passenger numbers this summer due to the Paris Olympics.

    • Passenger volumes are expected to rise by 30%, coinciding with the Olympic Games commencing on July 26.
    • Operational challenges are anticipated with the introduction of new EU border checks, set to impact peak travel times.
    • Measures have been employed to enhance efficiency, targeting the peak hours from 6am to 1pm on weekends.
    • Passengers are advised to anticipate busy conditions and plan for potential wait times at border controls.

Anticipating a busy season, the Port of Dover is preparing for a dramatic increase in passenger numbers, projected to surge by 30% as the Paris Olympics commence on July 26. This expected rise in travel demand stems from the allure of the global sporting event, drawing visitors from across the region.

This surge in passenger traffic poses logistical challenges, particularly with the implementation of new EU border checks required by the Entry/Exit System going live in October. Such measures are expected to affect transit times significantly, with peak processing periods forecasted to last up to two hours during key travel times – notably between 6am and 1pm on Fridays through Sundays.

To mitigate these anticipated wait times and manage the increased throughput of passengers, the Port of Dover has expanded its operational capabilities by increasing the number of border control posts for tourist traffic from seven to eleven. Additionally, measures are in collaboration with UK and French authorities, ferry operators, and resilience forums to promote an effective and smooth transit process.

Chief Executive Doug Bannister acknowledged, “As well as having even more tourist traffic coming our way this year, we have the added challenge of having to implement our infrastructure works required by France and the EU to support the EU’s new Entry/Exit system due to go live in October.”

Travellers are urged to prepare for their journey by ensuring necessary documents such as passports are ready to expedite the border control process, helping alleviate congestion for other travellers. Furthermore, despite the predicted busy periods, continuous sailings are assured, offering flexibility without additional cost to those affected by initial travel disruptions.

The Port of Dover remains committed to prioritising customer experience amidst these operational challenges, reflecting a proactive approach to the expected influx caused by the Olympic Games.

The Port of Dover is adjusting its framework to accommodate increased summer passenger volumes, prioritising efficiency amid the challenges posed by new border checks and heightened travel demand.
