Southampton demonstrates its growing prominence in the cruise industry.

    • In May, the port facilitated a record-breaking 71 cruise ship calls.
    • Over 400,000 passengers embarked or disembarked at Southampton.
    • 20% of the vessels utilised shore power, reducing emissions.
    • The cruise sector significantly boosts the regional economy, exceeding £1 billion.

The port of Southampton has established itself as a key player in the global cruise industry, evidenced by a record number of cruise ship calls in May. During this month, an impressive 71 cruise calls were registered, marking a significant milestone in the port’s operations. More than 400,000 passengers passed through, showcasing its capacity to handle a large volume of maritime traffic effectively.

Nearly a fifth of the visiting cruise ships accessed shore power, allowing them to switch off their engines and, consequently, eliminate emissions while berthed. This substantial use of shore power highlights Southampton’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its role in promoting eco-friendly practices within the maritime sector.

The economic impact of Southampton’s cruise operations is profound. In 2023, the port welcomed 2.75 million passengers, with the cruise sector contributing over £1 billion to the region’s economy. The upward trend in cruise activity is anticipated to further magnify these economic benefits in 2024, as suggested by the continued growth witnessed in the early months of this year.

Senior cruise manager Thea George expressed her enthusiasm for the port’s achievements, stating, “What a fantastic month May was. We’ve had a great start to the year with January to April seeing an increase in cruise calls as the months progress.” George highlights the collaboration between the cruise, marine, and land operations teams, ensuring seamless operations that facilitate timely departures and arrivals, thus enhancing the overall passenger experience.

Southampton’s rich maritime heritage is gloriously reflected in its vivid present-day operations. According to George, “Our port and the city are intrinsically linked with so much maritime history; it is great to be part of making new history in the modern world of cruising.” This connection continues to be a source of pride and a driving force behind the port’s ongoing success.

Southampton’s strategic advancements and operational prowess have reaffirmed its stature as a pivotal hub in the global cruise industry.
