The Sandals resort in St Vincent is hailed as a game-changer for the island’s tourism sector.

    • St Vincent’s new Sandals resort is seen as a ‘transformational’ addition, offering significant potential for growth.
    • The 301-room all-inclusive hotel opened in March, marking Sandals’ 18th Caribbean development.
    • Tourism minister Carlos James emphasises sustainable development, steering away from mass tourism.
    • Efforts involve strategic partnerships and training to integrate various luxury brands on the island.

The recent opening of the Sandals resort in St Vincent marks a significant evolution in the island’s tourism landscape. Described as ‘transformational’ by tourism leaders, this 301-room, all-inclusive hotel opened its doors in March and stands as the brand’s 18th development in the Caribbean.

Carlos James, the tourism minister, highlighted the importance of the Sandals resort to St Vincent’s tourism sector. He stated, ‘Sandals is a very important addition to the tourism product on the main island of St Vincent.’ This resort symbolises a shift from St Vincent being known solely for its Grenadines islands, such as Mustique, to developing the main island more cohesively.

The minister further emphasised the sustainable approach being adopted, contrasting it with mass tourism and high-rise structures. Instead, the Sandals concept is embraced as a model for achieving sustainable tourism development. According to James, ‘the strategic partnership utilising this wonderful brand sets the benchmark for future developments.’

In line with this vision, other luxury brands such as Marriott International are planning to establish presences in St Vincent. The impending completion of Black Sands Resorts by the end of 2025 highlights the island’s growing appeal to luxury brands.

Natasha Anderson, Europe sales director at the UK SVG office, underlined the importance of the Sandals resort in meeting the accommodation needs on the main island. She remarked on its transformational impact, adding much-needed rooms and aiding St Vincent in hosting international events such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Tourist Office is strategically collaborating with the Caribbean Tourism Organisation and other stakeholders to provide comprehensive training to travel trade professionals. This initiative includes updated online travel training to enhance knowledge of offerings in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Additionally, the introduction of the Special Marriage Licence e-portal exemplifies the island’s commitment to modernising visitor services. This portal enables couples to apply for marriage licences electronically, facilitating a smoother experience for destination weddings.

Anderson also stressed that sustainable tourism is crucial for St Vincent, given its reliance on tourism and agriculture. By advocating for eco-friendly practices and community-based tourism, the destination seeks to maintain its ecological balance and natural beauty.

The integration of Sandals and other luxury brands heralds a new era of sustainable and diversified tourism in St Vincent.
