The UK’s summer bookings to Greece are described as a ‘crazy rollercoaster’ due to recent challenges.

    • The UK remains Greece’s largest international market for peak tourist season, which is now extended to mid-November.
    • Greece’s tourism director reveals unpredictable sales patterns, with fluctuations in bookings from week to week.
    • Late bookings have increased, according to Greek hoteliers, surprising industry experts.
    • Despite challenges, Greece reassures potential visitors of enjoyable travel experiences.

The tourism sector in Greece has experienced a tumultuous season with UK summer bookings behaving unpredictably, likened to a ‘crazy rollercoaster.’ Factors such as water shortages and recent wildfires have been suggested as influencing holidaymakers’ decisions.

Despite these uncertainties, the UK solidifies its position as Greece’s most significant international market during the extended peak season, lasting through to mid-November. Eleni Skarveli, Director of the Greek National Tourism Organisation, noted the erratic trends saying, ‘One moment bookings were not going well and then the week after they would be great.’ This volatility has made understanding consumer behaviour particularly challenging for industry experts.

Skarveli communicated the importance of transparency with travellers. She assured the trade that Greek destinations remain viable and attractive despite ongoing issues. Skarveli emphasised, ‘We are not trying to say everything is perfect but at least people know what to expect and when [to visit].’ Her comments highlight the balance between managing expectations and promoting Greece’s offerings.

Furthermore, a notable shift towards late bookings has been observed, a trend echoed by Konstantinos Sinis, Grecotel’s sales and luxury director. Sinis remarked on the unexpected volume of last-minute enquiries, demonstrating a significant shift in booking patterns, as holidaymakers increasingly opt to travel within weeks of departure.

Both Skarveli and Sinis addressed these consumer trends during the launch event at the Inspiring Women Retreat, set to convene in Greece this November. Also highlighted was the UK’s marked success, with Grecotel reporting a 20% year-on-year increase in bookings, underscoring the enduring appeal of Greece as a holiday destination.

Greece remains committed to ensuring positive visitor experiences, managing industry challenges with transparency and strategic foresight.
