US Warning of Attack Threat at Sri Lanka’s Arugam Bay

A serious security alert has been issued for Sri Lanka’s popular tourist site, Arugam Bay.

    • The US Embassy in Colombo has received credible threats targeting tourists in the area.
    • The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice in light of this warning.
    • US Embassy personnel have been restricted from travelling to Arugam Bay.
    • Tourists are strongly advised to avoid the region, highlighting ongoing security risks.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has responded to a security alert issued by the US Embassy in Colombo concerning a potential attack targeting tourists at Arugam Bay, a prominent surfing destination located on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. The US Embassy identified ‘credible information’ concerning the threat, prompting the immediate imposition of travel restrictions for its personnel and a warning to US citizens.

The FCDO’s updated travel advisory underscores the threat’s severity, urging all travellers to avoid the area. It cautions visitors to remain vigilant, emphasising the need to follow official safety guidelines. This advisory parallels existing warnings about the unpredictable nature of terrorist threats in Sri Lanka, which have historically targeted areas frequented by international tourists, including hotels and places of worship.

The alert comes in the context of Sri Lanka’s recent history of terrorist activities. In April 2019, coordinated attacks in Colombo, Negombo, and Batticaloa resulted in the deaths of over 250 individuals, including eight British nationals. The FCDO reminds visitors that it is crucial to avoid crowded public areas and heed local authorities’ advice amid elevated security concerns.

This renewed caution serves as a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges faced in Sri Lanka, necessitating vigilant safety practices for tourists and citizens alike.
