Carnival Glory child assault leads to not-guilty plea and August arraignment

A passenger accused of the Carnival Glory child assault has pleaded not guilty and faces an arraignment hearing on 25 August, adding a courtroom dimension to an incident that has reignited debate about alcohol management and onboard conduct across the cruise industry.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 27 July, during a three-night sailing from Port Canaveral to Celebration Key, Carnival’s private destination in The Bahamas. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, three children were playing tag in a ship hallway when they encountered David Lawrence Crosby II, 44, of Surrency, Georgia. The affidavit states that Crosby was himself running down the hallway before he ‘suddenly stopped running and struck’ two of the children. One child suffered a bleeding lip and head pain after being struck in the face; the second was punched in the stomach and complained of pain. Authorities said the incident was captured on the ship’s cameras.

    Charges, Bail and Court Proceedings

Crosby was booked into Brevard County Jail on 27 July and charged with two counts of child abuse without great bodily harm. According to LiveNOW from FOX, he posted a total of $20,000 bond, at $10,000 per charge, and was released on 29 July. At a court appearance the same day, Crosby pleaded not guilty; he is scheduled to be arraigned on 25 August.

The affidavit states that Crosby was ‘heavily intoxicated’ at the time and later told authorities he could not remember the encounter. Investigators did not treat that claim as grounds to drop the charges.

Carnival Glory Child Assault Puts Conduct Policies Under Scrutiny

The case has prompted wider questions about how Carnival Cruise Line enforces its alcohol and guest-conduct rules. Under the line’s CHEERS! beverage programme, guests are limited to 15 alcoholic drinks per day, and bartenders are trained to refuse service to passengers who appear intoxicated. Carnival’s website states that ‘certain flags have been built into the system that are designed to monitor guests’ alcohol consumption and encourage responsible use of the programme.’ Whether Crosby’s drinking privilege had been restricted prior to the incident remains unclear.

Carnival’s Code of Conduct sets out a range of consequences for passengers who breach its rules, including a $500 fine, confinement to their stateroom, removal from the ship at their own expense, and a ban from future sailings. The company had not responded to questions about how its security team handled the situation, or whether Crosby faces a future sailing ban, at the time of publication.

The Carnival Glory, which entered service on 14 July 2003, carries up to 3,756 guests across 13 decks and operates two- to five-day sailings from Port Canaveral. Short sailings of this type, with their concentration of bar, nightclub and casino activity, have long drawn a more party-focused demographic than longer voyages, a tension the industry has never fully resolved.

Online commentary following the incident was divided. Some viewers responding to coverage by Cruise News Today condemned Crosby outright; others questioned why children were unsupervised in a ship corridor. A handful pointed to what they described as Carnival’s ‘booze cruise’ reputation, arguing the line faces structural difficulty reconciling heavy alcohol sales with a family-friendly environment. Carnival’s own code of conduct does ask adults to supervise children and keep hallway noise to a minimum, while simultaneously stating that disruptive behaviour affecting another guest’s comfort or safety will not be tolerated.

The Carnival Glory child assault case now moves to the Florida court system. With an arraignment set for 25 August, as reported by LiveNOW from FOX, the proceedings will determine whether the industry’s broader conduct questions remain a matter of comment sections or eventually attract regulatory attention from bodies such as the Cruise Lines International Association.
