Carnival Legend Tender Collision Disrupts Port Calls on Dover Sailing

The Carnival Legend tender collision on Tuesday, 11 August disrupted morning operations off Guernsey, leaving a number of passengers stranded aboard the ship and unable to reach shore before the vessel’s scheduled departure.

According to data from CruiseMapper, the incident occurred when two tender boats collided while crew were transferring guests between vessels near St Peter Port on Guernsey. The impact shattered a window on one of the boats. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew, but the collision slowed tender operations for several hours.

One passenger told Cruise News Today that their tender number was not called until after 1pm, resulting in a missed shore excursion and no opportunity to disembark before the ship’s scheduled departure. Carnival Cruise Line did not respond to a request for comment ahead of publication.

Compensation Issued Following the Carnival Legend Tender Collision

CruiseMapper reports that, as compensation for the disrupted voyage, passengers received a one-day pro-rated cruise fare refund plus US$100 in onboard credit per stateroom. For those whose travel arrangements were further affected, the compensation went further: passengers with impacted flights were reimbursed with up to US$200 per person for non-refundable flight change fees, also according to CruiseMapper.

Those figures go beyond what Carnival’s standard published policies would typically guarantee in cases like this. The cruise line’s itinerary change policy states that where disruption arises from factors beyond the company’s control, including adverse weather, mechanical breakdowns, port closures, or security issues, refunds and credits are not automatically offered. The question of whether a tender-boat collision falls within or outside that provision was central to passenger concerns circulating online in the hours after the incident.

The position regarding missed shore excursions is clearer. Carnival’s shore excursion cancellation and refund policy confirms that if an excursion is cancelled, passengers are entitled to a refund of the amount paid for the cancelled activity. That provision would apply to guests whose bookings were lost as a direct result of the delayed tender operations.

    The Legend’s Remaining European Itinerary

The Carnival Legend is currently on a 12-day round-trip sailing from Dover, and the tender delay at Guernsey was one stop in a packed European schedule. Remaining port calls include Vigo, Lisbon, Porto-Leixões, Le Verdon-sur-Mer and Zeebrugge before the ship returns to Dover on 20 August.

For operators and port agents along that route, the incident is a reminder of the logistical pressures that tender-dependent ports place on vessel scheduling. Ports such as St Peter Port, where ships cannot berth directly, rely entirely on small-boat transfers to move passengers ashore. When those operations are slowed, the knock-on effect runs through the entire day’s port programme, with excursion operators, local guides and transport providers all absorbing the disruption.

Tender incidents, while not routine, are a recognised operational risk across the industry. Minor slips and falls during passenger transfers are a known hazard, particularly in swell or in busy turnaround periods. Vessel-to-vessel collisions of the type seen at Guernsey are less common, and the absence of injuries here will be viewed as a positive outcome by Carnival’s safety teams and port authorities alike.

The Carnival Legend is presently in the Northeast Atlantic en route to Spain. Passengers aboard are also expected to witness what the itinerary positions as mainland Europe’s first total solar eclipse since 1999, a scheduled event that now follows what was an unscheduled and disruptive morning at anchor.
