Chiltern Railways, a UK-based train company operating on the London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill route, will be developing a new multi-storey car park at Banbury, UK.

The new car park to be constructed to serve Banbury station, will be providing around 707 additional parking spaces, and will be operated by Chiltern Railways. The new car park is to open in November 2013, to cater not only for current rail passengers from the area, but also for an expected increase in passenger traffic over the next few years.

Graham Cross, the business development director at Chiltern Railways, said, ‘As the station grows in popularity, we are committed to providing our customers with the best travel experience and finding a long-term car park solution is a key part of this. The car park, which will be built at the east side of the station and accessible by a link bridge, will not only mean more space for passengers but also encourage more people to travel by train.’

The car park expansion has been funded with GBP10m from Network Rail, the UK Department for Transport and the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC). To date this year, Chiltern Railways passenger traffic from Banbury has increased by 14 percent, compared to the same period last year.

Robin Gisby, the managing director of network operations at Network Rail, the rail operating brand for the UK, said, ‘This is a great example of the rail industry working together to improve the passenger experience without increasing the burden on the taxpayer. We have now allocated almost GBP100m towards projects which will improve passengers’ experience of travelling by rail and help us deliver a better value for money railway.’
