Disney Cruise Line New Ship Class Targets Ports Larger Vessels Cannot Reach

Disney Cruise Line’s new ship class, announced at the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, will comprise three vessels carrying 3,000 guests each at 100,000 gross tons, a size bracket deliberately chosen to unlock ports currently out of reach for the line’s larger fleets, with the first ship due in 2029.

The announcement positions the new class between Disney’s Magic-class vessels (2,400 guests, 84,000 GT) and its Dream- and Wish-class ships, which both carry 4,000 guests at 130,000 GT and 144,000 GT respectively. According to Disney Parks Blog, the line currently operates eight ships across the world, meaning the three new vessels would bring the total fleet to eleven once delivered across the stated three-year rollout period.

New Ports and Brand New Audiences the Priority for Disney Cruise Line New Ship Class

Claire Weiss, Creative Director for Disney Cruise Line, framed the new class as a deliberate reach into underserved markets. Speaking at the D23 event, Weiss said the ships are ‘right in the middle of our classic ships and our newer ones. That gives us some amazing opportunities to visit new places and reach brand new audiences we haven’t before.’ No specific ports have been confirmed, though the company has indicated the reduced tonnage will make destinations previously inaccessible to Dream- and Wish-class ships viable calls.

Disney’s own website puts the opportunity in fleet terms: ‘Once these ships are built, guests will have 13 different ways to experience Disney’s world-class entertainment, renowned dining, and impeccable guest service in more parts of the world.’ The three-ship build-out is scheduled over a three-year window from 2029, though yard assignments and precise delivery dates have not been disclosed.

Energy Efficiency Built Into Hull and Propulsion Design

The new class has been described as among the lightest vessels for their size in the industry. A streamlined hull combined with next-generation power and propulsion systems is intended to reduce fuel consumption, and a battery system will ‘support and supplement the main engines.’ The ships will also be capable of running on a range of fuels, including hydro-treated vegetable oil and renewable methanol.

Shore-power capability is included in the specification, allowing the vessels to shut down engines and connect to a port’s electricity grid while docked. The design also features lower-deck panoramic windows positioned mid-ship, giving passengers ocean views from areas of the vessel where glazing has traditionally been limited.

The environmental package reflects broader pressure across the cruise sector to reduce port-side emissions, and the multi-fuel capability gives operators flexibility as bunkering infrastructure for alternative fuels continues to develop across global cruise ports.

Japan Ship and Disney Believe Add to the Pipeline

Beyond the three new-class vessels, Disney has separately confirmed a sister ship to the Disney Wish that will be registered and homeported in Japan year-round. According to a post on Disney Parks Blog, the vessel is ‘expected to be approximately 140,000 gross tons and powered by liquefied natural gas, with about 1,250 staterooms.’ The post notes the ship will retain ‘many guest-favorite venues and experiences’ from the Disney Wish, with modifications ‘specially designed with Japanese guests in mind.’ Japan features in Disney Cruise Line’s 2029 itinerary plans, making it a parallel expansion track to the smaller new-class programme.

Separate D23 announcements also fleshed out details on the Disney Believe, which is scheduled for its grand reveal in October 2026. The ship will feature a Moana-themed grand hall, complete with a statue of the title character, while Woody and Buzz from Toy Story will appear on the stern and Tinker Bell on the bow.

Disney has also previously secured berth access at a popular Alaskan port through 2041, extending its North American itinerary footprint at the same time as it expands into new international markets. The combination of fleet growth, new class sizing, and the Japan homeport places the line on one of its more active expansion cycles in recent years, with D23 serving as the platform for the bulk of those disclosures.
