First Great Western Announces New Services and Station Development

First Great Western, a UK-based railway company, is offering supplementary evening services on the Severn Beach Line.

The service, which began on September 17, 2012, will be catering to extra demand on passenger traffic between Bristol Temple Meads and Avonmouth.

It is to provide a boost following a recent period of growth in passenger numbers on the line. The line was inaugurated by Cllr Tim Kent, executive member for transport at Bristol City Council.

Mark Hopwood, the company managing director for First Great Western, said, ‘First Great Western has worked hard with Bristol City Council and the Severnside Community Rail Partnership to improve and promote services on this popular route through Bristol. The huge increase in passenger numbers has encouraged us to put on this additional return train, providing a more frequent evening service.

This latest improvement comes on top of the extra seats that we provided on many trains earlier this year, and will make the line much more useful for evening journeys.’

The company has also announced installation of supplementary ticket vending machines at Bristol Temple Meads as part of its development operations. The self-service ticket vending machines (TVMs) are expected to expedite the ticket booking process and help in allowing the queues at peak traffic time move faster.

The company is expected to complete around £500,000 worth in station improvement works at Bristol Temple Meads, as part of the National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP) scheme.

NSIP scheme is supported by UK Department for Transport, and Network Rail, a company that operates railway networks in the UK.
