Glacier National Park Grizzly Bears Surround Hikers as Attack Incidents Mount

Glacier National Park grizzly bears were at the centre of two separate and serious wildlife encounters within days of each other in August, underlining the elevated risk to visitors during the summer hyperphagia feeding season. The incidents raise fresh questions about visitor safety management at one of the United States’ most heavily trafficked wilderness parks.

    Eight Grizzlies at the Summit

On 17 August, three hikers reached the upper slopes of Mount Siyeh and found themselves surrounded by eight grizzly bears. Hiker Ryan Roberts filmed the encounter and shared footage on Instagram, showing his granddaughter and another hiker standing on the peak as bears moved across the terrain around them. In the post’s caption, Roberts wrote: ‘We tried to summit 10020′ elevation, but there were 8 Grizzlies at the top today.’

Roberts’ video shows one bear at a distance, with others visible across the peak. As he panned to show the other side, his granddaughter called out that another bear was present. He zoomed in to show what appeared to be a bear emerging from an icy area. ‘There’s another one coming out from the glacier,’ Roberts said. He ended the recording noting his granddaughter had become distressed. ‘My granddaughter’s starting to cry,’ he said.

The congregation of bears at high elevation is a documented summer pattern. Roberts explained in his caption that the animals travel to these rocky peaks from mid-July to the end of August to feed on army cutworm moths. Wildlife ecologist Don White Jr., of the University of Arkansas-Monticello, told National Geographic in its Wild Yellowstone series that grizzly bears can consume up to 40,000 of these insects per day, spending hours turning over rocks to find them. The moths migrate from agricultural fields to high-altitude boulder fields during this period, providing a concentrated and calorie-dense food source ahead of hibernation.

During hyperphagia, bears show a higher tolerance for proximity to one another than at other times of year, which can explain why eight animals were sharing a confined summit area. Conflicts are possible in such conditions, though no altercation occurred during this particular encounter.

Glacier National Park Grizzly Bears Behind Second Incident Days Later

A more serious episode followed on 25 August. According to NPS Incident Reports for Glacier National Park, two park visitors (a man and a woman) were injured in a surprise close-range encounter with a female grizzly and her two cubs. The bears were at a distance of approximately five feet when the encounter began. In the confrontation that followed, the two hikers fell approximately 30 to 50 feet down a steep, rocky area below the trail.

One of the injured visitors was transported to Logan Health Hospital in Kalispell, Montana. A road was closed for two hours during the operation. The NPS has not released further detail on the conditions of those involved beyond what appears in its incident reports.

The 25 August attack comes months after a fatal encounter at the park. In May, 33-year-old Anthony Pollio died after a grizzly bear attacked him on a trail inside Glacier National Park, making the summer of 2026 a particularly difficult season for wildlife safety at the site.

    NPS Guidance for Bear Country

The National Park Service estimates roughly 300 grizzly bears live within Glacier National Park. The agency advises visitors to hike in groups, make noise on the trail, carry bear spray, and maintain a distance of at least 100 yards from any bear. If a bear makes contact, the NPS recommends falling to the ground on the stomach, clasping both hands around the back of the neck, and keeping a backpack on for protection.

The NPS specifically flags autumn as the period of highest hyperphagia risk. ‘Visitors are reminded that the fall season is when bears are more likely to be active due to hyperphagia. As bears prepare for the long winter, during which they will hibernate, they need to eat as much as they can to prepare to go months without food,’ the agency states. Bears should not be approached under any circumstances, and the agency instructs hikers to secure all food, cookware and waste (including empty containers) in a vehicle or designated food locker whenever not in use.

For travel operators and accommodation providers with properties near or within the park, the frequency of encounters this season points to a need to brief guests thoroughly before they set out on trail. The 25 August hospitalisation, with its associated road closure and emergency response, is a practical reminder that incident costs extend well beyond the individual visitor.
