GLP-1 Travel Insurance Disclosure Rules Could Void Cover for Millions

GLP-1 travel insurance disclosure obligations are catching out a growing number of travellers: with around 6% of Americans currently taking a GLP-1 drug, according to a KFF tracking poll, a failure to declare the medication or its underlying condition to a travel insurer could leave as many as 20 million people exposed to rejected claims.

The issue is not the drugs themselves. Semaglutide-based medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have surged in use for weight loss, diabetes, insulin resistance, and some autoimmune disorders. What is tripping up policyholders is a standard travel insurance requirement that pre-existing conditions and current medications must be declared at the point of purchase. Miss that step, and the policy can be voided, regardless of whether the claim has any connection to the medication in question.

GLP-1 Travel Insurance Disclosure: What the Rules Actually Say

Kara Gamell of Money Supermarket set out the position plainly in comments to Bristol Live: ‘If you’re prescribed these drugs for obesity, diabetes or any other condition, it’s essential to declare both the medication and the underlying health issue when buying your policy. Failing to do so could invalidate your cover, even if your claim has nothing to do with the treatment.’

The problem is compounded by how many GLP-1 prescriptions are obtained. A substantial share are issued through telehealth platforms or third-party services, which can feel administratively separate from a patient’s main medical record. Travellers who source their medication this way may simply not think to mention it when filling in a travel insurance application. The same risk applies to other telehealth-routed prescriptions, including those for mental health and dermatological conditions.

Even where a GLP-1 is purchased out-of-pocket, without involvement from a standard health insurer, the obligation to declare it to a travel insurer remains.

Coverage Gaps and Claims Denials Already a Pattern

The disclosure issue sits alongside a broader landscape of patchy coverage for GLP-1 medications. According to GoodRx, 7% of people with commercial insurance (close to 13 million people) have no coverage for any GIP or GLP-1 agonist prescribed for weight loss as of 2026. That means a sizeable cohort is already self-funding a medication that runs to hundreds of dollars per month before any travel insurance complication arises.

On the health-insurance side, denial rates have been high. Oana Health reports that 62% of requests for GLP-1 medications were rejected by insurers in 2024, though the same source notes that up to 80% of appeals against those denials succeed. That appeals rate matters for travellers who have already encountered a travel insurance complication: the process of contesting a claim denial is well-trodden, even if it is rarely straightforward.

Medicare Part D plans present their own nuance. According to Klarity, Part D plans are permitted but not required to cover GLP-1 medications specifically indicated for obesity, such as Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg), as of 2026. Coverage therefore varies by plan, and travellers on Medicare who assume their medication is covered for any purpose may find that assumption does not hold.

Carrying GLP-1 Injections Through Airport Security

Beyond the insurance dimension, the practicalities of travelling with a semaglutide injection are worth understanding. Most GLP-1 medications are prescribed as a weekly subcutaneous injection, meaning any trip longer than seven days will require the traveller to carry at least one dose.

On the security side, the position is relatively straightforward. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) exempts medically necessary liquids from the standard 3-1-1 carry-on rule. ‘TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your flight, but you must declare them to TSA officers at the checkpoint for inspection,’ reads the TSA information page on Disabilities and Medical Conditions. The same exemption covers ice packs and gel packs used to keep a medically necessary item cool, whether frozen, partially frozen, or melted.

Temperature control is a practical constraint. Most semaglutide injections need to be kept between approximately 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit before use. Travelling with a dedicated medication cooler and a thermometer is advisable for any journey where refrigeration cannot be guaranteed throughout.

The compliance point for travel professionals is clear. Agents booking clients who are known to be on GLP-1 therapy, or who ask about medication-related cover, should prompt disclosure to the travel insurer as a routine step, alongside any other pre-existing condition declaration. Leaving that conversation until after a claim arises is, on current policy wording, too late.
