The Reno Hawk Fire evacuations have closed one regional airport, disrupted operations at a second, and pushed local hotels to offer emergency rates as the blaze continues to burn uncontained across Washoe County, Nevada.
The fire ignited from a small, 30-acre brush fire northwest of Reno and rapidly grew overnight. According to Emergency Washoe, the fire originated off Hawk Meadow Trail, approximately one mile north of Cold Creek Trail in the Somersett area. It has since consumed more than 10,000 acres, and remains entirely uncontained.
Airport Disruption Compounds Reno Hawk Fire Evacuations
Reno-Stead Regional Airport, situated directly within the fire’s smoke plume, has closed to commercial air traffic and is operating solely in support of fire and rescue personnel. Reno-Tahoe International Airport remains open, though delays are rising across multiple carriers as evacuation zones extend towards its perimeter.
Southwest Airlines is reporting 11 delays, with Horizon Air logging three, SkyWest Airlines two, and United Airlines one. No cancellations have been confirmed at Reno-Tahoe International, but the airport has warned that further disruption is possible as crew availability, terminal congestion, and deteriorating visibility from the smoke plume are all potential factors. No operational travel waivers are currently in place at Reno-Tahoe International, though airlines may introduce them as the situation develops.
Passengers whose flights were cancelled as a result of the Reno-Stead closure are entitled to a refund under Department of Transportation rules, should they choose not to rebook. Travellers should contact their carrier directly to arrange resolution.
Scale of the Fire and the Emergency Response
The human cost has been severe. KCRA reports that the Hawk Fire has destroyed 47 homes, with 720 personnel currently deployed on the ground to bring it under control. Thousands of residents have been left without power across Washoe County, and evacuation orders cover a substantial portion of the county.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency on Saturday night. ‘I have declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as we respond to the Hawk Fire, which is spreading quickly and threatening homes and structures. Please heed all warnings from local officials, evacuate immediately if you are ordered to do so, and do not put yourself or first responders at risk,’ Gov. Lombardo said.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is issuing rolling updates on evacuation zones, road closures, and power outages. An evacuation centre has been established in Hall 4 of the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. The Washoe Regional Emergency Information Center is updating its site continuously as conditions change.
Hotel Sector Steps In With Emergency Reno Hawk Fire Evacuations Support
Several properties in the safe zone have stepped in to provide accommodation for displaced residents. Circus Circus Reno, Eldorado, Silver Legacy, and the J-Resort are offering rooms at $59 per night for evacuees, with resort fees waived on all qualifying reservations. Bookings can be made online using code SCLOC26 or by calling the properties directly. The fee waivers could represent savings of several hundred dollars per stay for those forced from their homes.
For travel industry operators with clients currently in or travelling to the Reno-Tahoe area, the fast-moving and unpredictable nature of the fire makes itinerary planning difficult. Hotel room availability, rental car supply, and other tourism amenities are likely to tighten further as the evacuee population grows. Operators should advise affected clients to monitor the Washoe Regional Emergency Information Center for the latest guidance and to contact their airline or accommodation provider promptly regarding rebooking or refund options.
