The Robinson R66 has been selected for Robinson R66 Army training under a contract awarded to M1 Support Services worth up to $10 billion over 26 years, as the US Army overhauls its entire initial rotary-wing pilot pipeline through a programme called Flight School Next.
M1 beat Bell in the final stage of the Flight School Next competition. Bell had proposed the Bell 505 as its training platform, while M1’s bid centred on the turbine-powered R66. The Army said the award replaces multiple existing training contracts with a single integrated system, consolidating flight instruction, academic instruction, simulators, maintenance and other support under one contractor.
Robinson R66 Army training: what the COCO model means for the fleet
Rather than operating government-owned primary trainers, the Army is moving to a Contractor-Owned, Contractor-Operated (COCO) structure. Under that model, M1 will procure, operate and maintain the aircraft itself, with the Army buying training outputs rather than managing a fleet. According to the programme requirements published on SAM.gov, Flight School Next seeks to deliver annual training for between 900 and 1,500 rotary-wing pilots under the COCO arrangement.
The R66 will take over the primary training role currently performed by the Airbus UH-72 Lakota. The Army currently trains approximately 1,250 new aviators each year at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and Flight School Next is designed to handle between 800 and 1,500 Army helicopter pilots annually once fully operational.
The Army said the new approach is intended to produce pilots with stronger basic flying skills while reducing the long-term cost of initial rotary-wing training. ‘Flight School Next delivers a critical improvement in our Initial Entry Rotary Wing Training model,’ said Maj. Gen. Clair Gill, Commanding General of the US Army Aviation Center of Excellence. ‘Simply put, it delivers new military helicopter pilots with far better foundational skills.’
The R66’s domestic manufacturing footprint
The R66’s selection hands Robinson a major new military training role and puts the five-seat aircraft at the centre of the Army’s initial helicopter training programme. The R66 is powered by a Rolls-Royce RR300 turboshaft engine and uses Robinson’s familiar two-blade rotor system.
Beyond its performance credentials, the aircraft carries a domestic manufacturing profile that will matter to procurement stakeholders. According to Robinson Helicopter Company, the R66 is the only 100% US-designed and manufactured helicopter in its airframe class, with more than 85% of its parts produced at Robinson’s vertically integrated facility in Torrance, California. That supply-chain depth reduces exposure to foreign components across a programme that will span more than two decades.
The Army did not disclose in its award announcement how many R66 helicopters will ultimately be delivered under the contract.
M1’s teaming structure for Flight School Next
M1’s programme team brings together several specialist organisations. Robinson Helicopter supplies the aircraft; Quantum Helicopters contributes flight operations experience; General Dynamics Information Technology covers the technology and systems integration side; and the University of North Dakota Aerospace Foundation provides academic and training programme support.
The breadth of the team reflects Flight School Next’s scope. The programme calls for commercially available aircraft, full flight simulators, qualified flight instructors, academic courseware and maintenance support, all delivered as a managed service rather than a collection of separate government contracts. Combining those functions under a single contractor is central to the Army’s stated goal of reducing long-term training costs while lifting the quality of output aviators.
Flight School Next is structured to run for 26 years, making the R66 the backbone of Army initial rotary-wing training well into the 2040s. With the contract awarded, M1 and Robinson now move into the transition phase that will eventually stand down the UH-72 Lakota from its primary training duties at Fort Rucker.
