The Royal Price Tracker suspension has cut off Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises passengers from an independently operated price-monitoring service, after the website’s owner cited an unspecified legal matter and halted all tracking activity with immediate effect.
A notice posted on the Royal Price Tracker website confirms that all tracking services have been paused and that a planned premium tier, due to launch on 13 August, will not proceed. ‘We will no longer be launching Premium as planned on August 13, and all tracking services have been paused,’ the notice reads. ‘A legal matter arose regarding aspects of the service. We’ll share more information when we’re able to.’
What Royal Price Tracker provided, and why passengers relied on it
Royal Price Tracker is an independently run tool, unaffiliated with Royal Caribbean, that monitored fluctuating prices for cruises and pre-cruise add-ons across both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises. Rather than logging into Royal Caribbean’s Cruise Planner each day, users registered their upcoming sailings and received email alerts whenever a price moved.
The tool had built a loyal following. Passengers described it in terms that reflect genuine utility within the cruise-booking workflow: one user said it had saved them ‘a ton,’ another credited it with saving ‘countless hours’ of manual checks, and a frequent cruiser called it a ‘lifesaver.’ The service also offered price-history graphs, historical pricing data, a drinks-package calculator, and searchable pages covering ships, ports, excursions and itineraries.
The shutdown appears to have come without warning to users already mid-track. One Reddit user noted the service had sent them a price alert on dining packages the day before the pause. Others said they had registered cruises recently and were caught off guard. ‘Bummer, I’m tracking a looot of things right now,’ one commenter wrote.
Monetisation plans and the Royal Price Tracker suspension
The website’s creator, identified only as Mike and known on Reddit as u/Hiking4Days, had set out ambitious development plans. In a Reddit post roughly two months before the suspension, he announced cabin-price tracking for both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises sailings, alongside the improved graph and calculator features. Just 15 days before the pause, he told a user asking about more detailed cabin tracking that a solution was in development and that the site had ‘some big things coming by the end of the year.’
Mike had also been candid about the site’s finances. ‘Currently we don’t have any monetization yet other than mainly donations,’ he wrote in a separate comment. ‘Our goal is to keep the site free, ad-free, and provide an additional service as a way to monetize.’ That additional service was the Premium tier, which would have checked prices multiple times a day.
It is that combination (more frequent data pulls and a paid product) that has drawn most speculation on Reddit about the cause of the pause. Several users suggested the tool may have scraped Royal Caribbean’s website or accessed pricing data in a manner that conflicted with the cruise line’s terms and conditions. One commenter framed it directly: ‘Scraping the Royal API like that and enabling the extra services on top of it is likely in violation of the RC terms of service.’ Another added that monetisation has historically been the point at which similar fan-built tools attract corporate attention: ‘Monetization has taken down sooooo many of these little handy pet projects.’
A third user connected the Premium tier’s planned frequency to the potential breach: ‘Premium tier would check multiple times a day. So if the issue was data scraping, I can see how “now we’re going to scrape even more AND make money off it!” might be an issue for RCCL.’
Neither party has confirmed the cause
Royal Caribbean has not commented on the suspension, and the theories circulating on Reddit remain unconfirmed. Royal Price Tracker itself has offered no further detail beyond the legal-matter notice. TheTravel, which first reported the story, said it contacted Royal Price Tracker for comment but received no response before publication.
For passengers with upcoming sailings, the practical effect is straightforward: manual checks via the Cruise Planner are now the primary option for those wanting to catch a price drop on cabins, dining packages, drink packages or excursions. Royal Caribbean does advertise discounts on pre-cruise purchases through Cruise Planner, but the displayed percentage does not always indicate whether a price represents the lowest point in the product’s pricing history, precisely the gap Royal Price Tracker had been built to close.
Mike has said he will share more information ‘when we’re able to,’ leaving the door open for a return, though no timeline has been given.
