United MileagePlus 2026 Changes Tilt Rewards Firmly Toward Cardholders

United Airlines‘ United MileagePlus 2026 changes, which took effect on 2 April, represent the programme’s most substantial overhaul in years, shifting the balance of earning power decisively towards members who hold a co-branded United credit card.

The restructuring cuts the base mileage earn rate for general members without a qualifying card from five miles per eligible dollar spent on airfare to three miles per dollar. Cardholders, by contrast, earn six miles per dollar as a baseline, with rates climbing to 12 miles per dollar for Premier 1K members who carry a qualifying card. For frequent flyers already embedded in the United ecosystem, the new structure accelerates rewards accumulation. For occasional travellers or those unwilling to take on an airline credit card, it materially slows it.

What the United MileagePlus 2026 Changes Actually Mean

The revised earn-rate table runs from six miles per dollar for a standard cardholder up through eight (Premier Silver), nine (Premier Gold), ten (Premier Platinum), and twelve (Premier 1K) for elite members with a qualifying card. Cardholders also receive automatic discounts on award flights: 10% for general cardholders, rising to 15% for eligible Premier members. That award discount is new, and it directly reduces the miles outlay needed to book redemption travel.

Two other changes stand out. First, Basic Economy passengers without elite status or a qualifying United credit card no longer earn redeemable miles at all. Given that Basic Economy fares frequently undercut standard economy pricing and are often the default result in online fare searches, this affects a broad segment of infrequent travellers. Second, the programme has introduced family mileage pooling, allowing up to five additional members to combine miles for award travel. Children linked to a qualifying cardholder’s account inherit the same earn rates and award discounts as the primary cardholder, which meaningfully improves the programme’s proposition for family travel.

MileagePlus miles continue to carry no expiry date as long as an account remains open, and the programme still connects members to Star Alliance‘s 26 member carriers plus 18 non-alliance partners including Hawaiian Airlines and Emirates. Members without sufficient miles for a full award ticket retain access to United’s Money + Miles option on eligible bookings.

The Spend Threshold Some Cardholders May Miss

The headline earn rates for cardholders carry a qualification that is easy to overlook. According to Points Crowd, holders of the no-annual-fee United Gateway card and the MileagePlus Debit Rewards Card must reach $10,000 in annual spend before unlocking the enhanced cardmember earn rate. Below that threshold, those cardholders do not automatically qualify for the higher per-dollar mileage rate that the programme’s marketing tends to lead with. For members on entry-level products who do not reach that spending level in a given year, the practical earn rate sits closer to the general member figure than the cardholder headline rate suggests.

That detail matters because United offers several co-branded cards at different annual-fee tiers, and the spend requirements vary by product. Members evaluating which card, if any, to add to their wallet need to model their actual annual spend against the relevant threshold before assuming the enhanced rate will apply to them.

The four Premier elite status tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K) remain in place and continue to layer additional benefits on top of the card-linked earn rates: complimentary upgrades on select flights, free checked bags, priority boarding, preferred seating, and bonus miles on eligible airfare. For travellers who reach status and hold a qualifying card, the combined earn rates are the highest the programme has offered.

TheTravel, which first reported on the programme changes, noted it reached out to United for comment but did not receive a response by publication. United has not publicly issued a detailed rebuttal of criticism that the changes disadvantage members who fly the airline without co-branded plastic.

The net effect of the April 2026 restructure is a MileagePlus programme that functions on a two-track model: a card-linked tier with accelerated earn rates, award discounts, and family benefits, and a base tier where accumulation has slowed and Basic Economy travel earns nothing. Travellers assessing whether to maintain MileagePlus as their primary loyalty programme, or shift spend to a competing scheme, need to run that comparison against their own travel frequency, card-holding status, and the $10,000 spend threshold that governs some of United’s entry-level products.
