Recent events in Bolivia have prompted heightened travel warnings from the Foreign Office.

    • A faction of the Bolivian armed forces reportedly led a failed coup in La Paz.
    • Britons in the city are advised to remain in safe locations and avoid certain areas.
    • The security situation is volatile, with rapid developments possible.
    • Authorities encourage vigilance and adherence to local guidance.

The Foreign Office has issued updated advice for British travellers in Bolivia, specifically highlighting the risks in the capital, La Paz. With reports of a failed military coup, there is an urgent recommendation for those in the area to remain in secure accommodations or locations deemed safe.

Heightened military activity by a faction of the Bolivian armed forces led to a significant disturbance in La Paz. The situation remains fluid, and individuals are urged to avoid the Plaza Murillo and its surroundings, a focal point of recent unrest. The security scenario can change unexpectedly, necessitating constant awareness.

A notable event during the coup attempt involved soldiers storming the presidential palace in La Paz. However, authorities have since regained control. The leader of the attempted coup was arrested by Bolivian police shortly after the event, with President Luis Arce condemning the insurrection and asserting governmental authority.

Armoured vehicles and troops initially occupied strategic positions in Murillo Square, where several key government buildings are situated. Their subsequent withdrawal marked an effort to deescalate the tense environment. The Bolivian government’s swift response highlights their capacity to manage the attempted coup.

Britons in Bolivia are strongly advised to monitor local news channels and maintain contact with respective embassies. Travellers should remain cautious, prepared for sudden changes, and comply with instructions from local authorities in any other parts of Bolivia.
