Thousands evacuated as wildfires threaten regions north of Athens. High temperatures and strong winds exacerbate the situation, with fires breaking out in numerous locations. Emergency services are fully deployed, with international assistance on the way. Local authorities and airlines provide guidance and updates to affected residents and visitors. Efforts are in place to manage the crisis and ensure safety.

Residents in areas north of Athens are facing severe challenges as wildfires, driven by extreme heat and powerful winds, necessitate mass evacuations. The crisis has led to thousands of people fleeing their homes, seeking safety from the fast-moving flames.

Tragically, the situation has claimed a life with one victim reported to have perished in the village of Varnavas, located approximately 25 miles from the Greek capital. The relentless fires have spread rapidly, with the flames reaching heights of up to 25 metres, and as many as 40 different outbreaks recorded on Monday alone.

Over 685 firefighters have been mobilised, along with 190 fire engines, to combat the blazes. Meanwhile, countries including Italy, France, Serbia, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Romania have committed resources to support Greece under the EU’s mutual civil protection mechanism. This aid includes aerial support and additional manpower, exemplifying a coordinated international response to the emergency.

Airlines and travel operators are working to manage the situation for travellers. In an official statement, Jet2 indicated: “We are aware of the wildfires affecting an area of Athens and are monitoring the situation closely.” The airline reassures customers that, despite some local infrastructure disruptions, flights are operating as scheduled, with additional time advised for journeys to the airport. EasyJet holidays echoed similar sentiments while collaborating with local authorities.

The Greek government, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has taken swift action in response to the escalating disaster. Emergency orders have been dispatched to evacuate residents from multiple villages, providing alternative accommodations in hotels and makeshift shelters, like sports halls. Further, hospitals are on high alert, and emergency medical teams are actively providing treatment for smoke inhalation cases.

The wildfires north of Athens highlight the urgency for continued emergency preparedness and international cooperation in crisis management.
