JetBlue Airways is experiencing a major leadership change as Robin Hayes steps down.

Hayes will be succeeded by Joanna Geraghty, making her the first female CEO of a major US airline.

The recent announcement of Robin Hayes stepping down as the CEO of JetBlue Airways marks a significant transition in the airline industry. His decision to resign, effective February 12, comes amidst ongoing efforts to navigate ‘extraordinary challenges and pressure.’ Hayes is set to be succeeded by Joanna Geraghty, the current President and Chief Operating Officer, marking her as the first female Chief Executive of a major US airline.

Robin Hayes has been at the helm of JetBlue for nine years, during which he has led the airline through various challenging times including the COVID-19 pandemic and the initiation of transatlantic routes to London and Europe. His strategic leadership has also involved spearheading the planned acquisition of Spirit Airlines, a $3.8 billion deal pending a court decision. Hayes, who joined JetBlue in 2008 and became CEO in 2015, has emphasized his deep connection to the airline and its culture.

Joanna Geraghty, who has been with JetBlue for nearly two decades, is poised to take over the leadership role, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the airline’s operations. Geraghty’s extensive experience includes overseeing the airline’s operations through some of the industry’s most turbulent times and implementing significant commercial initiatives. Her appointment comes as part of a rigorous succession plan, signifying the confidence the board places in her leadership abilities.

The airline has reported strong operational performance and healthy demand as it concluded 2023, with results anticipated to meet the higher end of expectations.

Peter Boneparth, Chair of JetBlue’s Board, recognizes Hayes for steering the company through significant industry changes and maintaining a focus on JetBlue’s unique culture. Boneparth also praised the leadership qualities Geraghty brings, emphasizing her commitment to driving JetBlue forward.

Geraghty has also highlighted the airline’s achievements over the past two decades and expressed her ambition to build on this momentum to achieve sustainable growth.

Hayes and Geraghty have collaboratively worked to ensure a seamless transition, with a shared commitment to positioning JetBlue for long-term success and value creation.

JetBlue Airways is undergoing a pivotal leadership change that positions the airline for future challenges and opportunities. With Joanna Geraghty at the helm, JetBlue aims to continue its trajectory of innovation and growth, maintaining its commitment to its customers and stakeholders.

The leadership transition marks a new chapter for JetBlue under Joanna Geraghty’s guidance.

She aims to uphold JetBlue’s reputation for innovation and growth amid ongoing industry challenges.
