Cruise Expert Debunks Common Themed Cruise Myths and Misconceptions

Cruise Expert, Will Sarson, reveals the most common myths and misconceptions surrounding themed cruises – including needing to have an interest in the selected theme

Themed cruises are a unique style of holiday, allowing travellers to bond over a commonly shared interest – such as food, wine, history or art.

They’re also growing in popularity, with search interest increasing by 15% over the past three months. Despite the intrigue, there’s still a range of misconceptions surrounding the holiday, including the myth that travellers are stuck on board the ship for much of the journey.

That’s why Will Sarson, Cruise Expert at Riviera Travel has explored these common misconceptions in further detail, revealing the truth about these exciting cruise holidays.

    Themed Cruise Mythbusting

Will Sarson said: “As themed cruises continue to grow in popularity, it’s important to dispel any myths and misconceptions surrounding the holiday type. In general, a themed cruise has all the typical benefits of a regular cruise trip, with added benefits. Therefore, let’s dive into the most prevalent myths surrounding themed cruises:

You MUST have an intense interest in the selected theme

“While themed cruise holidays are constructed with a certain individual in mind, they don’t exclude people who mightn’t share the same excitement or heightened interest towards the selected theme.

“For example, while some may opt for the History and Art of the Rhône themed river cruise due to their interest in Roman history, it’s also a great choice for people simply wanting to learn more about the topic.

Themed cruises have less priority/focus on food and amenity quality

“While I can’t speak for all cruise operators, at Riviera Travel, all our ships get the same high-quality facilities and attention – including our themed holidays. Our themed packages include full board dining, with qualified chefs on board constantly cooking fresh meals for travellers.

“Additionally, on themed cruises, there are free drink packages and complimentary tea and coffee, allowing people the opportunity to unwind and relax with a range of offered amenities.

Travellers are stuck on board for long periods

“Themed cruises include exciting itinerary packages that keep travellers occupied and entertained throughout the trip. While there’s some travel time between port destinations, our routes are designed to keep people exploring unknown destinations and creating lifelong memories.

“However, on the other hand, if an individual is looking for a slower-paced holiday, they can remain on board and enjoy the ship’s amenities without any pressure to join in on the excursion fun.

They are less relaxing than general cruise holidays

“The idea that you’re constantly on the move on a themed cruise is incorrect. Travellers will spend an ample amount of time on board the ship, both in between port destinations and throughout excursions, if they choose.

“Our selected river cruise ships include a range of amenities and facilities, maximising comfort and allowing passengers to unwind and enjoy a laid-back trip. Facilities include small splash pools, bistros, gift shops and lounges.

You HAVE to participate in all activities and excursions

“As mentioned, travellers can pick and choose excursions and activities that pique their interest rather than feel obligated to attend every event and excursion throughout the trip. With many of our themed cruises ranging around 8 days in length, there’s plenty of chance to get involved – but also a variety of opportunities to recharge.

“On a Riviera Travel themed cruise, travellers should never feel forced into taking part. We understand that a holiday should be taken at an individual’s own pace, meaning while some will be up for every activity, there’s also plenty that would rather stay on board the vessel.

Themed cruises are designed for a specific age group

“A common misconception surrounding themed cruises is their suitability towards demographics. There’s a prevalent myth that particular themed cruises are designed and tailored towards older or younger travellers but this is just simply untrue.

In fact, themed cruises are fit for anyone sharing an interest in the ship’s theme. This means any foodie or wine fanatic could join in on the Gastronomy of the Rhine & Moselle themed river cruise, whether they’re a pensioner or young adult. Itineraries are designed with every type of traveller in mind, ensuring everyone has a wonderful trip.

It’s difficult to meet new people on a themed cruise as a solo traveller

“While solo travelling may be nerve-wracking at first, a themed cruise is an incredibly easy way to meet new lifelong friends. Onboard a themed cruise, the chances are people already share a common interest, making breaking the ice all the easier. There’s also a variety of dinners and onboard activities offering plenty of opportunities for socialisation.

“Overall, a themed cruise offers a perfect and safe environment for solo travellers, allowing them to meet like-minded individuals who share similar interests in art, history, food or music.
