MSC Cruises has placed an order for two new ships with French builder Chantiers de l’Atlantique. These vessels will utilise liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a significant step towards sustainable shipping.

The introduction of these ships underscores MSC’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. Expected for delivery in 2026 and 2027, these vessels will join the World class fleet, blending modern technology and sustainability.

New Additions to the World Class Fleet

MSC Cruises has confirmed the order of two new LNG-powered vessels, expanding its World class fleet. The new ships, termed World Class 3 and 4, are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027. This confirms the firm’s option for additional ships, highlighting their growth strategy.

These vessels will accompany World Europa and World America, focusing on energy efficiency. By integrating heat recovery and other technological solutions, MSC aims to enhance environmental performance while promising passengers an unparalleled cruising experience.

    Innovative Marine Engineering

The new ships are equipped to handle various alternative fuels such as bio and synthetic methane and green methanol. This flexibility is a testament to MSC’s forward-thinking approach in marine engineering designed to adapt to evolving energy landscapes.

Featuring next-generation dual fuel internal combustion engines, these ships significantly reduce methane slip. This advancement not only boosts operational efficiency but also aligns with global environmental standards, showcasing MSC’s leadership in sustainable travel.

    Commitment to Sustainability

Each vessel will include shore power plug-in connectivity, reducing carbon emissions during port stays. MSC’s claim of implementing the “most advanced” wastewater treatment systems reflects their commitment to eco-friendly operations.

Strategic Partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique

The order continues a successful 20-year partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique, which has already produced 18 ships, with a 19th underway. This collaboration underlines the trust and mutual goals shared between the two companies.

Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises executive chair, stated, “The World class is a truly innovative prototype… building some of the most advanced ships in the world.” His words reflect the shared vision of growth and sustainability.

    Enhancements in Passenger Experience

Beyond engineering advancements, the ships promise to enhance the passenger experience through innovative designs and services. This includes improved cabin layouts and entertainment options, tailored to modern traveller preferences.
